ONEONTA, N.Y. - New Paltz used a seven-run fourth inning to grab a 13-1 SUNYAC victory over the Oneonta baseball team on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks move to 19-12 and 9-6 in the conference, while the Red Dragons fall to 18-16 and 6-8.
After New Paltz plated the game's first run at the top of the first, the Red Dragons answered in the bottom half. Junior Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) reached after being hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a stolen base and an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) to even the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied through three innings before New Paltz erupted for seven runs in the fourth. The Hawks strung together six hits in the frame, highlighted by a three-run double from Johnny McHugh, to open an 8-1 advantage.
New Paltz continued to add insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings, capitalizing on walks and defensive miscues to extend the lead.
On the mound, Jake Quigley (Harrison, NY/Harrison) (4-2) took the loss for Oneonta after allowing eight runs over 3.2 innings. The Red Dragons used four pitchers in the contest, with Andrew Dillon (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale), Jonah Snyder (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central), and Dominic Colarusso (Stony Point, NY/Albertus Magnus) providing relief.
Offensively, Oneonta was held without a hit in the game, with Monserrat accounting for the team's lone run. The Red Dragons drew three walks and were hit by a pitch, but were unable to generate sustained offense against New Paltz starter Xavier Zykoff, who tossed a complete-game no-hitter with four strikeouts.
New Paltz finished with nine hits on the afternoon, led by McHugh's five RBI performance.
