Softball Wraps Up Spring Break Trip at Claremont Mudd Scripps

CLAREMONT, CA. -- The Oneonta softball team completed their California Spring Break trip with a doubleheader against Claremont Mudd Scripps, Saturday afternoon. Claremont took both games with a walk-off run in the final inning of game one for an 8-7 final, then secured game two, 5-3. The results moved the Red Dragons record to 2-12 this season and improved the Athenas to 11-8-1 overall.

Sophomore Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with a stolen base, and sophomore Kayla Kean (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) ended the day 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Eva Blaney (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) finished game one 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, while senior Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and sophomore Tanner Smith (White Plains, N.Y./Vahalla) each recorded a hit and two RBI in the first game. Senior Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) went 2-for-2 in game two with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored.

Game One: Oneonta 7, Claremont Mudd Scripps 8
Claremont recorded the first four runs of game one to take a 4-0 lead after the first three innings.

Oneonta got their first run on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore Riley McDonnell (Melville, N.Y./Walt Whitman) singled to right field, then she advanced to third on freshman Eva Blaney's (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) infield single. McDonnell crossed home on a grounder from freshman Rylee McGinness (East Quogue, NY/Westhampton Beach).

The Red Dragons gained a 6-4 advantage after a five-run rally in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) blasted a two-run double to right field and later scored on a fielding error during senior Abigail Silliman's (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) at-bat. After Blaney reached first on another Athena error, sophomore Tanner Smith (White Plains, N.Y./Vahalla) roped a single to left field and scored Silliman and Blaney.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Claremont tallied three runs to go up 7-6. The Athenas worked a bases-loaded walk, then they tied the game on an infield single before regaining the lead with a sacrifice fly.

Oneonta tied the game in the next inning. Sophomore Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) led the sixth inning off with a single to center field. Freshman Ella Kean (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) followed Camacho with a single to left field, then sophomore Anna Spicciatie (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) advanced both Red Dragons with a sacrifice bunt. After the sacrifice bunt, sophomore Kalya Kean brought Camacho home with a single to center.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Claremont scored the game-winning run on a fielder's choice. Danica Stirling started the inning with a single for the Athenas, then she made it to third on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter hit a ground ball in the infield and Stirling was able to beat the throw out at home.

While Blaney went 3-for-4 in game one, Camcaho, E. Kean, and K. Kean all went 2-for-4. Cardello was 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double, and Smith was 1-for-3 with a two-run single.

Senior Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (2-4) was tagged with the loss after pitching 4.0 innings, striking out one, and allowing three runs on nine hits. Sophomore Bridget Barry (East Patchogue, N.Y.) pitched 2.0 innings and allowed two unearned runs on one hit.

Hannah Adams (7-3) got the win for Claremont after pitching the final 2.0 innings, striking out two, and allowing one run on four hits. Perri Derian started the first 5.0 innings, struck out two, and allowed six runs, three earned, on eight hits.

Game Two: Oneonta 3, Claremont Mudd Scripps 5
The Athenas took the lead in game two with a two-out RBI triple in the bottom of the first inning.

E. Kean tied the game up with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Silliman in the top of the third inning, however Claremont regained the lead, 3-1, with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Red Dragons tied the game in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Emma Moore (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) smacked a triple on a full count to right field and scored McDonnell. Blaney was up next, and she reached first on a fielder's choice as Claremont went home and tagged Moore out. Oneonta then tied the game when Silliman hit a double to right field and brought in Blaney.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Athenas recorded two more runs for the 5-3 final. The first run was scored on an RBI single by Mrdah Murali, then Murali crossed home on a fielding error.

Camacho finished game two 3-for-3, while Silliman went 2-for-2 with an RBI double and a run scored. Moore ended 1-for-1 with the RBI triple, and K. Kean went 1-for-2 with a walk.

McTiernan (0-4) received the loss after pitching the complete game for Oneonta, allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits.

Derian (3-1) got the win for the Athenas after pitching 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out two and allowing four hits. Adams pitched 4.0 innings, struck out four, and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Thursday, March 26, for their home opener against RPI starting at 3 pm.
