ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) hit his first home run of the season in the eighth inning to help the Oneonta baseball team secure an 8-3 win over Union on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons enter spring break on a four-game winning streak and move to 6-3 overall, while the Garnet Chargers fall to 2-3.
After a scoreless first inning, senior Edem Okpattah (Baltimore, MD/Georgia Premier Academy) doubled in runs from senior Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) and sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) to take a 2-0 lead. Union responded in the third with Andrew Keaveney hitting a triple to center field to bring Dylan Swarts home to make it 2-1.
The Red Dragons tacked on a run following an RBI single from freshman Carlos Almanzar (Brooklyn, NY/John Jay Campus).
Oneonta held Union scoreless in the fourth inning, with junior Tyler Kropp (Goshen, NY/Goshen Central) striking out three Garnet Charger batters.
The Red Dragons continued to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth. A pitch hit Cronin to load the bases with one out, and then Almanzar walked in a run. Sandoval hit a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 5-1.
In the sixth inning, Almanzar knocked a single to left field to bring in runs from senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) and Jacoby to push the lead to 7-1. Swarts led off with a double in the top of the seventh and reached home on an error to cut the lead to five.
Jacoby sealed the win with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Jacoby batted 3-for-3 with four runs, one RBI, and two walks. Almanzar went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Okpattah added two hits and two RBI.
Swarts was 2-for-5 with two runs. Keaveney had one hit and one RBI.
Sophomore Ryan Krzemienski (Commack, NY/Commack) earned the win and moves to 1-0. He pitched 2.0 innings with no hits or runs and one strikeout.
Oneonta next heads to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational and first plays No. 8 Rowan on Friday, March 13 at 2 p.m.
