Red Dragons Defense Shuts Down Mustangs in 54-45 SUNYAC Victory

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team earned their first SUNYAC win of the season with a 54-45 victory at Morrisville, Friday evening. Oneonta used the three-ball in the first quarter to build a sustainable lead while they limited Morrisville's offense to shoot 23.2 percent from the floor in the game. The Red Dragons improved to 6-4 this season, 1-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Mustangs dropped to 1-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Freshman Kayla Beaudoin (Brunswick, NY/Tamarac) shot 4-for-10 from the floor, 2-for-5 from three-point range, for the game-high 14 points with four rebounds. Senior Lidia Boucher (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) also shot 4-for-10 from the field, 3-for-6 from deep, and finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double along with three steals and two blocks. Freshman Addy Eckert (Bloomville, NY/South Kortright) totaled seven points while she brought in a career-high 11 rebounds, and freshman Sydney Pleat (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) scored seven points and five boards in her Red Dragon debut.

"We continue to grow as a team and it was another great learning experience," head coach Daphne Thompson commented.

Oneonta shot 6-for-9 from three-point land in the first quarter to build a 25-13 lead. Boucher started hot and drained a trio of three-pointers to put them up 9-4 at 7:07. The Mustangs pulled within one until the Red Dragons scored seven unanswered points off a Beaudoin jumper and pair at the free throw line, then a triple from junior Angelena Giuliano (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) at 2:37. After sophomore Leela Guobadia (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) received the ball and scored in the paint for her first points of the season, Pleat drained a three-pointer from the wing for her first career basket with Oneonta and the 12-point advantage.

Following Eckert's corner two at the start of the second quarter, Beaudoin scored the team's next seven points and put them up 34-16 with her second three pointer of the game with 2:50 left in the half. Freshman Tyalia Fret-Thom (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) capped off the first half scoring for the Red Dragons with a drive to the lane as the team went into the half ahead 36-21.

Freshman Skye Cameron-Pressley (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) drilled a midrange jumper for Oneonta's first bucket in the third quarter, then Boucher scored on a second chance opportunity to give them a 40-25 lead at 4:16. Junior Maddie Hoy (Canton, NY/Canton Central) knocked down a corner three-pointer while Morrisville ended the quarter on a 7-3 stretch to trim their deficit to 43-32.

The Mustangs pulled within seven, 45-38, with 7:50 to play, until Eckert scored off an offensive putback then sophomore Kendall Mack (Cortland, NY/Cortland) drove past her defender and laid it in to put the Red Dragons up 11 with 6:26 left. Oneonta maintained their lead for the remainder of the game with a layup and free throw from Eckert and a pair of free throws from Pleat.

The Red Dragons shot 34.0 percent from the floor, held a 54-29 rebounding advantage, and outscored the Mustangs 10-0 in second chance points. Anyssia Ingersoll led Morrisville with 12 points and three rebounds, while Celeste Baldwin made three three-pointers and finished with 11 points.
