Women’s Basketball Falls in Conference Play at Canton

CANTON, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team dropped to Canton on the road in SUNYAC play, 72-41, Tuesday evening. Canton built a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter and they managed to hold on to it for the rest of the contest. The result moved the Red Dragons to 10-8 this season, 5-6 in the SUNYAC, and improved the Roos to 15-3 overall and 8-3 in conference play.

Freshman Addy Eckert (Bloomville, NY/South Kortright) shot 3-for-7 from the floor, 5-for-5 at the line, and finished with the team-high 11 points with five rebounds and a block. Sophomore Kendall Mack (Cortland, NY/Cortland) shot 3-for-7 from the field for eight points, while sophomore Leela Guobadia (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) recorded seven points, six boards, and three blocks.

"Not our best performance today, coach included; we will look to bounce back on Friday," said Head Coach Daphne Thompson.

Oneonta took an early 4-3 lead at 9:17 after Eckert drained a pair at the line and freshman Tyalia Fret-Thom (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) scored a second-chance basket. Junior Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) nailed a deep two-pointer from the wing to maintain the one-point edge at 7:57, then Canton ended the quarter on a 21-0 run to take a 26-6 lead. The Roos had eight different players score during the stretch with Sierra Pabo leading with eight points.

Eckert scored five straight points to start the second quarter and pull Oneonta within 15, but Canton answered with 14 straight points to go up 40-11 at 3:42. Freshman Sydney Pleat (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) knocked down a triple and Guobadia split a pair at the line, however the home team went into halftime up 43-15.

The Red Dragons outscored the Roos in third quarter, yet they still trailed 57-31 heading into the final period. Eckert, Mack, and Guobadia all recorded four points in the quarter, while freshman Kayla Beaudoin (Brunswick, NY/Tamarac) and junior Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) each hit a jumper.

During the fourth quarter, Mack drained a pull up jump shot and banked in a layup for four points. Pleat went into the paint for a floater while Guobadia cut to the rim and received a pass from sophomore Emily Bennett (Brentwood, NY) for the bucket, then Bennett drove past her defender to lay it in herself.

Canton shot 46.4 percent from the floor and finished with a 41-39 rebounding advantage. The Roos had three players with double figures and were led by Pabo with 28 points and six rebounds. Oneonta shot 25.4 percent from the field and held a 32-22 margin in points in the paint.

The Red Dragons return to Dewar Arena for the start of a five-game home stretch on Friday, January 30, in the Battle of the Red Dragons against No. 20 Cortland at 5:30 pm.
