ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNYAC announced their 2025 softball awards including the Julie Lenhart Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coaching Staff of the Year and the All-Conference teams, which are nominated and voted on by the conference coaches. Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) was named the Julie Lenhart Player of the Year award, junior
Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) received the Defensive Player of the Year award, and four Red Dragons were selected to the All-SUNYAC teams.
The four players that were named to the All-Conference teams were Serena, senior
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley), and sophomores
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) and
Ava Thys (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary (Va.)). It is the fourth time Serena earned All-SUNYAC status in her career, earning first team for the third straight time. It is the first time Brown, Mangone, and Thys were named All-SUNYAC, as they each received second team honors.
Serena became the third Red Dragon to be named SUNYAC Player of the Year, joining
Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) (2024) and Brianna Rivera (2015). She was a triple crown winner in the conference this season and led the league in overall hits (60), home runs (10), RBI (43) doubles (16), total bases (108), batting average (.480), on-base percentage (.556), and slugging percentage (.864). In conference play, she led the conference in the same categories, posting 32 hits for a .542 batting average with seven home runs, nine doubles and 26 RBI with a .597 on-base percentage and 1.051 slugging. Serena's game-highs all came in a road game against Canton where she went 5-for-5 with two home runs, seven RBI and six runs. She finished the twin bill 8-for-9 with four home runs and 12 RBI. Defensively, Serena had a .984 fielding percentage behind the plate and caught seven runners stealing.
Silliman is the second straight Red Dragon to earn the SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Year as
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) won the award last season. The junior second baseman had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 19 putouts and 22 assists in 16 conference games. Overall, Silliman had a .947 fielding percentage with 62 putouts, 45 assists and just six errors in 38 games for Oneonta. At the plate, she had 20 hits, including three doubles, 15 RBI, and finished with a .317 on-base percentage.
Brown was in the starting lineup for all 39 games for the Red Dragons as a pitcher and first baseman. She appeared in the circle 23 times with 14 starts for an 11-7 record, struck out 137 batters in 115.0 innings pitched, and posted a 3.23 ERA. The sophomore was one of four pitchers in the conference to record 11 wins, and she finished tied for third in strikeouts. In conference play, Brown had the best strikeout per seven innings ratio at 10.16, pitched 41.1 innings for a 4-3 record, struck out 60 batters which was the fourth most in the league, and had a 3.05 ERA. She became the seventh Red Dragon in program history to throw a no-hitter when she threw one against Canton with a program record 14 strikeouts. Brown was also a force at the plate as she swung a .326 batting average with 11 doubles, one triple, and the team's second-best and conference's fourth-best 29 RBI.
Mangone started all 39 games for Oneonta this season at first base and the designated player. She finished with the team's third-best batting average (.342) and the second-best on-base percentage (.391). Both were in the top 20 in the SUNYAC. The senior recorded 40 hits, including 11 doubles, with 19 RBI. In conference play alone, she was 10th in the league with a .473 on-base percentage, 12th with a .420 batting average, and totaled four doubles with 10 RBI. Defensively, Magnone posted a .953 fielding percentage at first base with 79 putouts.
Thys started all 39 games for the Red Dragons at shortstop. She became the 13th player to record 50 hits in a season in program history as she ended the season with a .373 batting average, which was second-best on the team and ninth in the SUNYAC. The sophomore totaled six doubles, one triple, 23 RBI, and led the team with nine stolen bases. In conference play, she was tied for sixth in the league with 16 RBI, seventh with a .434 batting average, and she slugged .509, which was ranked 17th. Defensively, Thys totaled 49 putouts and was second on the team with 63 assists.
The group of Red Dragons helped the team finish the season 20-19 overall and 10-6 in conference play to clinch the five seed in the SUNYAC tournament, where they advanced to the championship and finished as the runner-up.
