ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNYAC named Oneonta softball's sophomore
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) and senior
Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) as the conference's Softball Pitcher and Athlete of the Week, respectively, Monday afternoon. The duo helped Oneonta go 2-0 with a historic SUNYAC sweep at Canton, where the team recorded 47 total runs and allowed only one hit in a 34-0 and 13-0 pair of wins.
Brown became the seventh Red Dragon pitcher to throw a no-hitter and she tossed a program record 14 strikeouts in the Red Dragons 34-0 game one victory. The sophomore was untouchable in the circle, pitching 5.0 hitless innings while allowing just three walks. She was also a force at the plate, finishing game one 4-for-6 with five RBI. Brown is currently first in the SUNYAC in wins (5), second in strikeouts (55), and sixth with a 3.08 ERA.
Serena delivered an explosive offensive performance that fueled the doubleheader sweep that improved Oneonta to 8-10 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The senior catcher finished the twin bill 8-for-9, launching four home runs and driving in 12 RBI. In game one, Serena was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with two home runs in the first inning alone. The performance tied her for the program's records for most hits and RBI in the game. Serena continued her dominance in game two, going 3-for-4 with two more home runs and five RBI for a 13-0 win. She now leads the conference in several categories including batting average (.463), home runs (5), RBI (19), and slugging percentage (.815).
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, April 12, for a SUNYAC doubleheader against New Paltz starting at 1 pm at the Red Dragon Softball Field.
