OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team came up short to Oswego in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament, 59-54, Tuesday evening. Oneonta built a 14-point lead halfway through the second quarter and were ahead until Oswego went on a 13-5 run in the final 2:33. The Red Dragons finished the season 11-15 overall.
Senior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) led the team with 16 points and three rebounds, and senior
Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) finished with 14 points and seven boards. Senior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) recorded eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals, while sophomore
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) had six points, seven boards and seven assists.
In the first quarter, Zuntag worked the paint for a couple baskets and Brown hit a pair of midrange jumpers to put Oneonta up 8-6 at 1:42. Desrats knocked down two at the free throw line for a 10-6 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Red Dragons started the second quarter with a 12-2 stretch to go up 22-8 with 5:17 left in the half. Sophomore
Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) hit a jumper to start the run then later scored a reverse layup. Zuntag drove in for a layup, Desrats went off the glass and in, Brown knocked down a jumper from the corner, then Schwarzbeck capped it off with a jump shot from the top of the arc. The Lakers closed out the half with 10 unanswered points to pull within four, 22-18.
Schwarzbeck drained a corner three at 6:45 in the third to put Oneonta up 29-22 as the teams traded baskets to start the second half. Zuntag extended the lead to 36-27 with a triple from the top of the arc at 3:16, but Oswego ended the third with an 8-1 stretch to make it a two-point game.
Schwarzbeck powered a 7-0 run with a jumper from the elbow, a three from the wing, and a pair at the line to put Oneonta ahead 44-35 with 7:03 to play. The Lakers scored a couple three-pointers and got within one with 3:57 left. Desrats drove to the rim for a basket, however Macey DeOrdio made a three to tie it at 49 with 2:33 left. The three sparked a 13-5 Laker run for the 59-54 final. Senior
Alana Batson (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) banked in a deep three-pointer from the wing with 12 seconds left to make it 57-54, but Oswego made two free throws to close it out.
DeOrdio led Oswego with 21 points and four assists, Shania Iglesias had 17 points, and Giavanna White-Principio had 20 rebounds. The Red Dragons shot 30.1 percent from the floor, while the Lakers shot 32.8 percent from the field and held a 50-46 rebounding advantage.
Zuntag ended her career with 590 rebounds, the 12th most in the program's history and Brown finished with 263 career assists, the 10th most in Red Dragon women's basketball history.
