MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team picked up a SUNYAC road win over Morrisville, 68-49, Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Oneonta clinched a spot in the SUNYAC tournament that starts on February 25. The teams were tied after the first quarter then the Red Dragons used the second and third to build a 21-point lead and cruise to the win. Oneonta had four players score double digits as the team improved to 11-12 on the season, 8-8 in the SUNYAC, and the Mustangs dropped to 6-17 overall and 3-13 in conference play.
Junior
Lidia Boucher (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central High School) shot 3-for-5 from three-point range and scored the game-high 13 points with four rebounds. Senior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, the most a Red Dragon has recorded in a game since Madeline Frank grabbed 18 against Oswego on December 6, 2016. Both senior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) and sophomore
Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) scored 10 points. Brown totaled four assists and a pair of steals, while Young brought in six boards and went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Both teams relied on the deep ball and scored three three-pointers in a back-and-forth opening quarter. Following a pull up jumper from Brown, Boucher and Young traded threes with Morrisville to keep Oneonta ahead 12-11 at 2:31. Boucher hit her second trey from the top of the key then a corner jumper to put the Red Dragons up six, however the Mustangs scored the final points of the quarter to tie it at 17.
With the game tied at 20 at 7:15 in the second quarter, Zuntag scored a tightly contested putback and sparked a 14-3 run to close out the half. After Zuntag's basket, Boucher and freshman
Nai Torres (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) each drained a three-pointer from the wing while senior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) knocked down a pair at the line. Sophomore
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) ended the run with a jump shot from the corner then she beat her defender for a floater to put Oneonta up 34-23 at the break.
Desrats kicked it out to Young for a knock down three and a 14-point lead to start the third quarter. The Red Dragons' advantage grew to 19 at 6:12 in the third after Zuntag hit a long two-pointer and Young made a layup. Senior
Molly Coyne (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) scored seven of the team's final nine points in the quarter with a pair of deep two-pointers and an and-one to give Oneonta a 58-37 lead entering the fourth.
The Mustangs cut the deficit to 14 with 8:57 left, however the Red Dragons held them off for the remainder of the game. In the remaining moments, Zuntag scored a couple buckets down low, Brown and Young each had a basket, and Desrats and sophomore
Maddie Hoy (Canton, NY/Canton Central) split a pair at the line.
Desrats finished with eight points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Coyne recorded seven points with a block. Morrisville was led by Kieonna Christmas with 11 points and eight rebounds, Anyssia Ingersoll added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Red Dragons shot 42.6 percent from the floor, held a 55-29 rebounding advantage, and had a 26-6 margin in bench points. The Mustangs shot 23.7 from the field.
Oneonta finishes the regular season on the road on Saturday, February 22, against New Paltz at 2 pm.
