ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's swimming & diving team broke two pool records in their senior day dual meet against New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons had some strong performances but lost a close 104-101 to the Hawks.
Oneonta opened by winning the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Ross Caimano (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury), juniors Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School) and Delroy Tyrrell (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago), and sophomore Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany) recorded a 1:40.96.
Sophomore Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 11:10.99, while sophomore Colin Ringwood (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was third at 11:22.42.
Freshman Russell Cheng (Westchester, NY/Ardsley) swam a 1:59.14 to place second in the 200-yard freestyle, and senior Jack Humphrey (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) earned third at 2:01.04.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Hitzschke swam a 22.76 for second, while Caimano placed third at 23.37.
Senior James Llewellyn (Great River, NY/East Islip) set a pool record in the 200-yard IM and won at 1:58.71. Junior Brendan Heaney (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks Central) was third at 2:12.04.
Hitzschke took second in the 100-yard butterfly with a 55.77, and senior Anthony Genovese (Seaford, NY/St. John the Baptist) swam a 1:01.33 for fifth.
Tyrrell cruised to a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle at 47.92, and junior Nicky Byrd (Purchase, NY/Harrison) took third at 55.09. Senior Maddox Aramini (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield) swam a 57.58 to touch second in the 100-yard backstroke. Capella was second in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:28.82.
Oneonta wrapped up the day with a pool record in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Llewellyn, Aramini, Ringwood, and Tyrrell won by 40 seconds at 7:19.74.
Oneonta will next compete at the SUNYAC Championships in February. 19-22
