Red Dragons Hold Off Tigers on the Road for 65-61 Win

Beaudoin, Desrats and Fret-Thom Responsible for 58 of Team’s 65 Points

COBLESKILL, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team gained the lead 16 seconds into the contest and kept it for the length of the game during their 65-61 road win over Cobleskill, Monday afternoon. The win over last year's North Atlantic Conference champions improved the Red Dragons record to 4-2 this season, while the Tigers dropped to 5-4 overall.

Freshman Tyalia Fret-Thom (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) came off the bench and shot 7-for-11 from the floor to finish with the game-high 17 points and six rebounds. Junior Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) recorded her first career double-double with 15 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field, and 10 rebounds, and freshman Kayla Beaudoin (Brunswick, N.Y./Tamarac) added 14 points and four assists. The Red Dragon trio combined for 46 points, eight assists, and were responsible for 58 of the team's 65 points.

Junior Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) drained the game's opening basket with a triple from the top of the arc and sparked a 16-6 Oneonta run, where senior Lidia Boucher (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) knocked down a trey and led the charge with seven points. Jaiyla Colon scored a three-pointer for Cobleskill at the end of the quarter to cut her team's deficit to seven.

Colon got the Tigers to within five, then the Red Dragons ignited a 12-3 stretch to go up 30-16 with 1:50 left in the second quarter. Beaudoin, Desrats, and Fret-Thom all recorded four points during the run. Oneonta went into halftime with a 10-point advantage after Cobleskill ended the quarter with a second chance basket and a pair of free throws.

Beaudoin scored two at the line then dished it to Young for a three-pointer from the wing to give the Red Dragons their largest lead of the game, 35-20, at 8:19. The Tigers trimmed their deficit to five, but Beaudoin and freshman Skye Cameron-Pressley (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) each converted an and-one while Fret-Thom scored down low to keep the Red Dragons ahead 45-34 at 2:38. Cobleskill scored 10 unanswered points to get within one, before Fret-Thom ended the quarter with a three-pointer to give Oneonta a 48-44 edge entering the fourth.

The Tigers made it a one-possession game until Beaudoin scored five straight and found Cameron-Pressley cutting to the rim to put the Red Dragons up eight, 55-47, with 6:20 to play. Cobleskill got it to a three-point game with 2:23 left, before Desrats went hard to the rim for the bucket.

Kayleigh Bryant answered Desrats with a layup to pull back within three, however Desrats and freshman Addy Eckert (Bloomville, N.Y./South Kortright) used the free throw line to seal the win.

Boucher finished with seven points and two blocks, while Young recorded six points and six rebounds.

Colon led Cobleskill with 14 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, and Bryant had 11 points with nine rebounds.

Oneonta shot 39.7 percent from the floor, held a 45-40 advantage in rebounds and outscored Cobleskill 32-16 in the paint. The Tigers shot 31.1 percent from the floor.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Monday, December 29, to take on Castleton at 4 pm in Montreal, Canada for the Montreal Shootout.
