CANTON, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's basketball team fell on the road to SUNY Canton in SUNYAC play, 68-55, Tuesday evening. Oneonta was ahead by six points at halftime then Canton outscored them 39-20 in the second half. Senior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) went 5-for-11 from the floor and had the team-high 11 points with eight rebounds and three assists. The Red Dragons moved to 5-6 on the season, 2-2 in the SUNYAC, and the Roos improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Oneonta got out to a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of play with a pair of jump shots from sophomore
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and senior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy), a deep three-pointer from junior
Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School), and a layup from Zuntag. Senior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) scored a couple baskets to keep the lead, however the Roos made it a one-point game, 18-17, heading into the second quarter.
The Red Dragons began the second quarter with a 7-0 run to go up 25-17. Zuntag started the stretch with a steal and a fastbreak score, then she found Desrats cutting to the basket for a layup. Sophomore
Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) knocked down a triple from the wing to give the team their eight-point lead at 7:05. A few buckets at the end of the half from Brown, Desrats, and Young kept Oneonta ahead entering the break, 35-29.
The Roos opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 37 at 6:06. Zuntag scored down low to regain the advantage for Oneonta, however Canton closed out the quarter and started the fourth with a 14-0 stretch that put them up 51-39 with 8:31 to play. The Red Dragons cut their deficit to single digits with 2:22 left, but the Roos used the free throw line in the closing minutes to hold onto the game.
Desrats finished with nine points, five rebounds and two steals, and Young recorded eight points and nine rebounds off the bench. Canton had three players record double digit points, Kat McRobbie-Taru led the game with 17 points and three blocks.
Canton shot 41.0 percent from the field, while Oneonta shot 39.0 percent from the floor and held a 43-32 rebounding advantage.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, January 11, for a SUNYAC game against New Paltz at 2 pm in Dewar Arena.
