NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped a pair of games to Cortland and Buffalo State on day two of the double elimination SUNYAC Tournament, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons were defeated by their Red Dragon rival, 8-1, then to the Bengals, 5-2, concluding their 2024 season with an overall record of 22-17. Senior
Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) finished the day 3-for-6 and scored a run, while senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) went 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run.
Game One: Oneonta 1, Cortland 8
Cortland gained an 8-0 lead after the first two innings. They scored one off an RBI double by Halle Wright in the first then rallied with four RBI singles and a couple walks for seven runs in the second.
Oneonta recorded their run in the top of the third inning. Senior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher then she stole second. Following Haley's sacrifice bunt that moved Cancelleri to third, Fiori brought her home with a line-drive single to right field.
The rest of the game became a defensive matchup as neither team got a runner to second base, and only four batters reached first base in the final 4.0 innings of play.
Haley and Fiori both went 1-for-2 while Fiori tallied her 22nd RBI of the season.
Freshman
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) (10-6) was tagged with the loss after pitching the first 1.1 innings, striking out one, allowing three runs on two hits. Junior
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) pitched 4.2 innings and allowed two hits.
McKenna Barry (16-2) pitched the complete game for Cortland, struck out one, and allowed one unearned run on two hits. Shannon Scotto was the only Cortland batter with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Game Two: Oneonta 2, Buffalo St. 5
Buffalo State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a pair of RBI singles from Madison Lucas and Sam Schafer. The Bengals doubled their lead with a two-run double from Erin Paolilli in the top of the third.
Oneonta had the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, but Buffalo State got out of the situation with a ground out. The Red Dragons got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Haley led off the inning with a single down the first base line then Fiori reached first on a fielding error by the Bengals third baseman. After both runners advanced closer to home on a passed ball, senior
Sara Cartier (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) lined the first pitch she saw directly off the first baseman's glove and into right field to score Haley. Freshman
Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) brought in Fiori with a sacrifice fly to the center fielder to make it 4-2.
Buffalo State added one more run in the top of the seventh on a ground out. Oneonta had two runners reach base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore
Cailin Hall (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) singled to right field and Haley laid one down in front of the catcher, but with the tying run at the plate the game ended with a foul fly out to first.
Haley finished game two 2-for-4 and Fiori was 1-for-4 as both scored a run.
Brown (10-7) pitched the first 2.2 innings, struck out three, and allowed four runs on four hits. Senior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) came in for the final 4.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits.
Izzy Pezdek (9-8) pitched the full game for Buffalo State, struck out five, and allowed two runs, one earned on four hits.
