ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team erupted for 13 hits in the 18-0 victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday's home opener victory. The Red Dragons move to 1-4 on the season, while the Roos fall to 0-4.Â
Canton opened the first inning by having a runner reach third, but Josue Ortega grounded out to keep it scoreless. Oneonta erupted for six runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) and sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) both were hit by pitches. Junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled a bunt to load the bases with no outs. Gilkey scored following a Joey Dwyer (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) at-bat, and Gilkey reached home on a wild pitch. An error allowed Dywer to score to put the score 3-0. Senior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) doubled to right field to bring in two more runs, and senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) brought in the sixth run.Â
Oneonta added a run in the second inning when senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) singled in Dwyer to push the Red Dragons up 7-0. The top of the third was quick and capped off with a Red Dragons' double play from Dwyer, Jacoby, and Foglia.
Liquori struck out two Canton batters, and neither side scored until Oneonta rattled off nine runs in the sixth. Foglia reached home on a catcher error, and Dwyer scored on a Liquori double. Senior Thomas Skoczek (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) pinch-ran scored on a Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) single to right field. Oneonta capitalized on some wild pitches from the Roos and pushed the lead to 13-0 following singles from Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) and Jacoby. Junior Andrew Bonilla (Walden, NY/Valley Central) doubled in Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) and Jacoby to make it 15-0.Â
Padilla doubled in the eighth to give COle Rockwell a run. Bonilla grounded out, but not before Padilla reached home as the Red Dragons went up 18-0.Â
Liquori (1-1) went 6.0 innings with three strikeouts. Freshman Brendan McGowan (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham Senior) earned the save pitching 3.0 innings with three strikeouts.Â
Oneonta is back to host Canton on Sun. Mar. 3 in a doubleheader at noon.
