AUBURNDALE, FL -Â Oneonta wrapped up the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a closely fought contest with St. Norbert on Friday morning. The Green Knights (6-8) came out the victor and defeated the Red Dragons (7-7) 8-5.Â
At the top of the first, sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) tripled to the right field to get the Oneonta offense moving. Junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) grounded out to first base, but Jacoby reached home to make it 1-0. The Green Knights struggled to get on base, and Oneonta used a double play from Jacoby, freshman Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central), and Foglia to seal a shutout second inning.Â
A quick three outs ended the Red Dragons' offense in the third, and senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) struck out a Green Knights' batter in the bottom of the frame.Â
Oneonta went down two outs in the fourth before Liquori doubled down the left-field line. Junior Logan Hutter (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/Smithtown) tripled to center field to bring Liquori home to make it 2-0.Â
St. Norbert's Matt Perry doubled in Trevor Reinhardt in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1. Liquori responded by striking out the following three batters to keep the lead.
Senior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) led off with a single to left field and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.Â
The Green Knights took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth, with Reinhardt hitting a three-RBI home run to left center. Dwyer led off with a home run on the first pitch in the top of the sixth to tie 4-4. Liquori let the Red Dragons retake the lead by scoring on a wild pitch.Â
St. Norbert tied 5-5 in the sixth and held Oneonta scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Levi Crosswell hit a two-RBI single in the seventh to give the Green Knights a 7-5 lead. Carson Krumei knocked a home run to left field in the eighth to seal the 8-5 victory.Â
Liquori hit 3-for-5 with two runs, while Jacoby added two hits and a run. Liquori pitched 5.0 innings with six strikeouts.Â
Reinhardt went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Krumei finished with two hits, one run, and one RBI.Â
Jace Midbon (2-2) went 7.0 innings with four strikeouts. Marty Walsh earned the save after pitching the final inning.
Oneonta opens conference play on Fri. Mar. 22 by hosting Cortland at 3 p.m. at Red Dragon Baseball Field.Â
