Red Dragons Split Doubleheader with Cougars

AUBURNDALE, FL—The Oneonta baseball team went 1-1 against Minnesota Morris on Wednesday morning. The Red Dragons (6-6) fell 11-3 in the opening game but bounced back with a 13-7 victory over the Cougars (5-5).

In game one, the Red Dragons started strong, with senior Kyle Rosenberger (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) striking out three consecutive Minnesota Morris batters. Oneonta did not get anything going in the bottom of the frame, and Rosenberger struck out a fourth Cougar in the second inning to keep it scoreless.

The Cougars scored on a Ben Meuser sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead in the third before striking out the final batter.

Oneonta scored three runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled in junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor), and sophomore Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) scored on an error. Another Cougars' error allowed Foglia to reach home. Rosenberger struck out two more in the fourth, and Oneonta held a 3-1 lead until the fifth inning.

Minnesota Morris scored five runs in the fifth. Meuser hit a two-RBI single to tie the game 3-3. A couple of Oneonta miscues gave the Cougars a 6-3 advantage.

The Red Dragons were shut out for the remainder of the game, with the Cougars adding another five in the top of the sixth.

Oneonta bounced back in game two. Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) singled in a pair of runners to take a 2-0 lead in the first. At the top of the third, a Liquori single brought Dwyer home, and then senior Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) doubled in Liquori to make it 4-0. Junior Ethan Duda (Latham, NY/The Albany Academies) followed with an RBI double down the left-field line, and freshman Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) brought another run with a single to third.

Minnesota added a run in the third and two more in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3. Oneonta erupted for seven runs in the fifth. Junior Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) hit a double to right field to bring in two runs, and senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) singled home Jachens to make it 10-3. Oneonta added a few more runs on some wild pitches to go up 13-3.

Minnesota Morris went three up and three down in the bottom of the fifth, with sophomore pitcher Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) striking out a batter.

The Cougars looked to come back in the sixth with four runs before senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) struck out the final batter. Minnesota had one final chance in the seventh but could not reach home.

Kaseta went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Liquori was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jachens added two hits, a run, and an RBI.

Thorsland (2-0) went 5.0 innings and struck out six batters.

Oneonta next plays Mount Saint Mary (NY) on Thur. Mar. 14 at 9:15 on Lake Myrtle Field 2.
