CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneota women's soccer season ended with a 2-1 loss to Cortland (11-3-4, 8-0-1 SUNYAC) in the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon. Oneonta (6-10-1, 5-4-0 SUNYAC) scored the opening goal less than two minutes in before Cortland scored two unanswered in the first half.
Oneonta drew a pair of corner kicks in the first minutes, and at 1:29, freshman Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) crossed the ball in front of the Cortland goal. Sophomore Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) headed the ball into the bottom left corner to put Oneonta up 1-0. The lead was shortlived as Cortland answered in the 11th minute. Tyla Vuotto knocked the ball in the front of the post from a cross by Katie Cosenza. Piper Klammer then chipped the ball in to tie 1-1.
Cortland took the lead four minutes later following a free kick where Vuotto poked the ball past the Oneonta goalkeeper to make it 2-1. Despite the two early goals, the Oneonta defense held, with junior goalie Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) making two saves in the first half.
Cortland picked up the pressure in the second with back-to-back shots from Liz Allen that Meehan stopped. Freshman Karsyn Kondracki (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) mustered a shot on goal following a Oneonta corner in the 54th minute, but Cortland goalkeeper Kristen Spendal knocked the ball away. Meehan saved another pair of shots in the 57th minute, and freshman Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) fired a shot on the counterattack that Spendel knocked away.
In the end, Cortland outshot Oneonta 21-6, while corners were tied 6-6. Meehan finished with eight saves, while Spendal had two. Oneonta finished the season at 6-10-1 and 5-4-0 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons also reached the semifinals for the first time since 2017.
