ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's swimming & diving team split in dual meet action against Hartwick and Brockport on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta fell to the Hawks 178-102 and defeated the Golden Eagles 148-114.
The Red Dragons opened the day by winning the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Maddox Aramini (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield), junior Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School), and sophomores Ethan Cairo (Bethpage, NY/Freeport) and Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany) swam 1:41.58.
Sophomore Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) took third overall in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 11:00.24, and sophomore Colin Ringwood (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was fifth at 11:27.38. Aramini placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:54.92. Junior Delroy Tyrrell (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago) won the 100-yard backstroke at 53.00, while senior Joseph Campise (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) was fourth at 59.34.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Cairo touched fourth overall at 1:04.58, and freshman Luke Goodspeed (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) was fifth at 1:05.12. Hitzschke took fourth in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:12.18. Martinelli finished second in the 50-yard freestyle at 22.89, and senior Ross Caimano (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) placed third with a 23.07.
Tyyrell continued with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle at 49.75. Caimano grabbed fourth overall in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.92. Goodspeed swam a 2:23.33 in the 200-yard breaststroke to finish second overall. In the 500-yard breaststroke, Ringwood was third at 5:22.74. Hitzschke was second in the 100-yard butterfly at 55.89. Junior Nicky Byrd (Purchase, NY/Harrison) swam 2:14.96 in the 200-yard IM to place fourth, and junior Brendan Heaney (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks Central) was fifth at 2:15.55.
Oneonta concluded with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Hitzschke, Aramini, Martinelli, and freshman Russell Cheng (Westchester, NY/Ardsley) were second at 3:23.34.
Oneonta competes in their first home meet against Delhi next on Wed. Nov. 13 at 4 p.m.
