TROY, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's swimming & diving team fell 169-105 to RPI on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons had solid individual performances against a competitive RPI team.
Oneonta opened with a third-place performance in the 400-yard medley relay. Juniors Delroy Tyrrell (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago) and Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School) and sophomores Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany) and Ethan Cairo (Bethpage, NY/Freeport) swam a 3:42.32.
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, sophomore Gavin Weseman (Olean, NY/Olean) placed third at 11:40.31. Senior James Llewellyn (Great River, NY/East Islip) grabbed a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:50.65, and sophomore Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) took fifth at 1:57.03.
The Red Dragons had a strong showing in the 100-yard backstroke, taking the two, three, and four finishes. Tyrrell was second at 53.38, senior Joseph Campise (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep) was third at 59.18, and junior touched at 1:02.23 for fourth overall.
Cairo took second in the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:04.57, while freshman Bastian Dudley (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) swam a 1:07.92 for third. Freshman Josh Pappace (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz Senior) placed fourth at 1:16.66. Sophomore Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany) touched second in the 50-yard freestyle at 22.88, while senior Jack Humphrey (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) swam 24.52 for fourth.
Martinelli continued with a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle at 51.45. Junior David Scott (South Ozone Park, NY/) took fourth at 55.14. Llewellyn swam 2:08.02 to place second in the 200-yard backstroke, and Campise was third at 2:12.64. Byrd swam a 2:16.31 for fourth overall.
Freshman Luke Goodspeed (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) posted a 2:22.67 in the 200-yard breaststroke to place second, and junior Brendan Heaney (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks Central) was third at 2:32.84. Sophomore Colin Ringwood (Auburn, NY/Auburn) took third in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:32.94, while Weseman took fourth at 5:35.96.
Tyrrell grabbed first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.85. Hitzschke was fourth at 55.83.
Llewellyn was the top Red Dragon in the 400-yard IM at third with a 4:36.09.
The swimming event concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay, in which Oneonta placed third. Junio Maddox Aramini (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield), Goodspeed, Tyrrell, and freshman Russell Cheng (Westchester, NY/Ardsley) finished in 3:26.27.
In the one-meter dive, freshman Ben Heyman (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) won with 152.40 points. He then won the three-meter dive with 163.65 points.
Oneonta next competes at Hartwick on Sat. Nov. 9 against Brockport and the Hawks. Â
