Women’s Basketball Overpowers Buffalo State, 57-26

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team defeated Buffalo State in SUNYAC play for a 57-26 win, Saturday afternoon. Junior Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) recorded the game-high 21 points, junior Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) went 6-for-8 from the field for 14 points and senior Jenna Harclerode (Sayville, NY/Sayville) had an 11-point, 17-rebound double-double. The Red Dragons improved to 8-10 overall and 6-5 in the SUNYAC, the Bengals dropped to 4-14 on the season and 1-10 in the conference.

Oneonta opened the game with a 12-0 run through the first five minutes. Zuntag started the run with an and-one, Harclerode scored off a putback then converted an and-one herself, and Brown made a couple baskets in the paint. Buffalo State got on the board at 4:33 with a Maddy Stearns free throw and Grace Carey hit the Bengals first field goal at 3:34. Zuntag converted Oneonta's last four points of the quarter for a 16-5 advantage.

The Red Dragons started the second quarter on an 8-2 stretch to go ahead 24-5 at 7:09, where Zuntag scored six of the points during the run. Oneonta ended the half with six unanswered points from Zuntag, junior Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy), and Brown for a 30-9 lead.

Oneonta continued to extend their lead to 28, 38-10, at 7:30 off a couple jump shots from sophomore Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) and Brown. The Red Dragons maintained a 25-point lead for the remainder of the third with points from Brown, junior Molly Coyne (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), and sophomore Lidia Boucher (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central High School) as Oneonta went into the fourth up 46-20.

The Bengals offensive woes continued into the fourth quarter and the Red Dragons held onto the win. Freshman Carlie Young (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville Central) scored on a putback then Boucher split a pair at the line to give Oneonta their largest lead of the game, 57-22, with 4:01 to go.

Stearns led Buffalo State with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Red Dragons shot 33.8 percent from the field, held a 54-34 rebounding advantage, and shut down the Bengals, limiting them to 13.0 percent from the floor.

Oneonta is back in action Tuesday for SUNYAC play at Cortland on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
