OSWEGO, N.Y. -- A late run in the fourth quarter gave Oswego State a 55-48 win over the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team in SUNYAC play Tuesday evening. Senior
Molly Stephens (LaGrange, NY/Arlington) had the team-high 10 points as the Red Dragons dropped to 6-10 on the season, 4-5 in the SUNYAC and the Lakers moved to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
Sophomore
Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) and junior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) powered Oneonta's offense and combined for all 11 points in the first quarter. Schwarzbeck drove to the rim for the opening bucket of the game while Wakin controlled the offensive paint and scored off a couple putbacks to put the Red Dragons up 6-5 at 4:22. Junior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) passed it to Schwarzbeck driving to the basket for a layup then again on the wing for a deep trey at the buzzer to put them ahead 11-8 after one.
Stephens went coast to coast before junior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) scored inside the paint to put the Red Dragons up 15-10 with 7:15 to go in the half. The Lakers hit a couple three-pointers for a one-point edge, however Brown found junior
Molly Coyne (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Zuntag to regain the lead at 2:31. Harclerode hit a jumper and Stephens drained one from the corner in the closing seconds to take a 23-20 lead into halftime.
The Lakers went on a 13-6 run to go up five, 34-29, at 3:06 forcing Oneonta to call a timeout. Out of the break, Brown split a pair at the line, and Harclerode hit a jumper then grabbed her own miss for a putback to tie the game at 34 entering the fourth.
Oswego went up six before Oneonta had Stephens, Zuntag, and Wakin score to tie it at 40 with 5:46 left. After a Laker free throw, Wakin hit a jumper for the one-point lead, but Oswego went ahead 46-42 with 2:45 to go. Zuntag pulled it back to within one with a layup and a free throw, however Sydney Hoefs made a jump shot and Logan Castiglione scored a three-pointer to give them a 51-46 advantage with 58 seconds remaining. Stephens hit a jump shot out of a timeout to make it a three-point game with 48 seconds left, but the Lakers closed out the game with a few shots from the line.
Schwarzbeck, Zuntag, and Wakin all finished with nine points, Wakin brought in eight boards while Zuntag had seven. Harclerode recorded the team-high nine rebounds and Brown led with six assists.
Shania Iglesias led Oswego with 17 points, while Castiglione and Hoefs each had nine.
The Lakers shot 33.9 percent from the field, while the Red Dragons shot 32.8 percent and outrebounded Oswego, 45-35.
Oneonta's next game is on Friday against Fredonia at 5:30 pm in Dewar Arena.
