GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team had 12 Red Dragons receive All-State honors at the NYS Collegiate Championships at Nassau Community College, Saturday afternoon. Juniors
Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) (HWT) and
Joel Zea (Queens, NY/Thomas Edison) (174) finished second in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, and sophomore
Carson LiCastri (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow High School) (197) placed second in the Open Division. Oneonta finished in second place with 146.5 points while Ithaca won the overall event with 188.0 points. Â
The other wrestlers that earned All-State status were seniors
Kenneth Sauer (Franklin/Franklin),
Max Yahre (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK),
Nino Prisco (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane),
James DeLucia (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot),
Esdras Ramos (Philipsburg, NJ/Sachem North), junior
Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip), and freshmen
Billy Colloca (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon Senior High),
Phillip Venne (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore), and
Matt Coffey (). Â
Jackson pinned all three of his opponents to get to the first-place match in the freshman/sophomore 285 division. He started the day with a 5:41 fall against Will Hotaling, pinned Brockport's Luke Coffin at 5:39, then advanced to the final with a 1:06 fall against Oswego's Kevin Arriaza. In the final, Jackson fell to Danny Church at 2:13. Â
Zea started off with a couple takedowns and a four-point nearfall for a 13-5 major decision over Ithaca's Sebastian Panzenbeck. He then beat Brockport's Khol Kalfass in a 6-2 decision and advanced to the final in a 14-11 decision against the Golden Eagles Kiam Coleman. Zea fell in the final to Niagara County Community College at 3:42. Â
LiCastri opened the tournament with a 0:28 fall against Elmira's Casey Cooper then beat Tyler Lynde in a 11-0 major decision. He advanced to the final on a medical forfeit and was up 12-9 in the championship before he was taken down by Army Prep's Reid Schroeder and pinned at 6:25. Â
Yahre won his first two matches in the 157 Open Division via a 1:03 pin against Edwin Carlos then recorded a couple takedowns in the first two periods for a 9-6 decision over Elmira's Hollis Berry. He went to the third-place match, after dropping his match to the eventual winner NYU's Cooper Pontelandolfo, and defeated Merchant Marine's Jacob Brockey in an 8-2 decision. Â
Sauer and Coffey each finished fourth, Sauer competed in the 174 Open Division while Venne was in the 165 Freshman/Sophomore Division. Sauer pinned Elmira's Bryan Stafford at 4:37 then recorded three takedowns and a three-point nearfall for a 13-1 major decision against Merchant Marine's Trevor Badiu. Coffey recorded two pins on his way to his fourth place finish. He opened with a 1:25 fall against Oswego's Jasiah Rios and had a 4:24 fall against Hunter's Therrol Lafayette.
Colloca earned fifth place in the 125 Freshman/Sophomore Division. Colloca dropped his first match before taking the next three. He had three takedowns in a 14-6 major decision over Alex Hyman, recorded a 16-0 tech fall Hunter's Michael Douglas at 2:23, then scored 10 points in the first period to win the fifth-place match in a 14-11 decision over Ithaca's Cosmo Damiani. Â
Ramos took fifth in the 165 Freshman/Sophomore Division. He scored an escape and a takedown in the final period for a 7-3 decision of his opening match against Merchant Marine's Barrett Waller. He went to the consolation side after dropping a 21-4 tech fall to the eventual winner, Hofstra's Greyson Harris. Ramos then pinned Oswego's Jasiah Rios at 4:17, picked up two takedowns in a 6-1 decision win over Ithaca's Carlos Guzman, and received fifth place on a medical forfeit. Â
Poggi, DeLucia, Venne, and Prisco all finished sixth in their respective divisions. Poggi won a 7-4 decision in the 133 Open Division then went to the consolation side of the bracket where he pinned junior
Giovanni Russo (Cortlandt Manor/Walter Panas) at 2:43. He advanced to the fifth-place match on a medical forfeit but came up short in an 8-7 decision to Buffalo's Cole French where French scored an escape with 25 seconds left to get the win. Â
DeLucia fell in his opening match before he won a 4-2 decision against Alfred State's Elijah Timbrouck. He was up 4-3 in the first period against Badiu when he won by forfeit.
Venne dropped his first match in the 141 Freshman/Sophomore Division. He took an 8-5 decision against Alfred State's Richard Morales, then scored two takedowns and three escapes in a 17-15 decision over SUNY Ulser's Brenon Theil. Â
Prisco fell short in his opening match where Alfred State's Brent Perry won in sudden victory, 7-4, and finished sixth in the 184 Freshman/Sophomore Division.
The Red Dragons are back in action Sunday, January 28, for the John Reese Duals at Wilkes College.
