CORTLAND, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team forced extra innings on the second day of the SUNYAC Tournament but fell 9-6 to Oswego to see their season come to an end. The Red Dragons finish the season at 25-15 overall, the highest win total since 2010.Â
After two quick Oswego outs, Jacob Levine doubled down the left-field line. CJ McCarthy then hit s single RBI to put the Lakers up 1-0. Oneonta could not muster any runs until the bottom of the second inning when freshman Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) hit his first-career home run to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead.Â
In the top of the third, Tim Schinto scored on an error to tie, and then the Lakers brought in two more runs to lead 4-2. Oswego's Jelan Hamer doubled in a run to push the lead to three, and Oneonta was held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) reached home when Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) grounded out to shortstop, and then Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) scored on a dropped sacrifice fly to left field.Â
Junior Michael Sadowski (Queens, NY/Queens Metropolitan) struck out two batters over the next two innings to keep the score 6-4.
Oneonta rallied in the bottom of the ninth when Turner led off with a single to left field. Sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled to the right side, but the following batter fouled out to give the Red Dragons two outs. Turner scored on a Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) single, and then Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) hit a single RBI to tie 6-6 and force extra innings.
Neither side could score in the tenth inning, and Oswego went to bat in the 11th. After the lead-off batter walked, Hamer homered to left center to put the Lakers up 8-6. Oswego managed one more run before the third out. A comeback was not in the works, as Oneonta went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame.Â
Sadowski went 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts, while Oswego's Alek Conrad went 6.0 with one strikeout. Anthony Van Fossen picked up the win (4-1).Â
Before the game, Oneonta junior Thomas Skoczek (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) was honored as the SUNYAC Elite 20 winner. The award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. Skoczek has a 3.96 overall GPA as a Biochemistry major.
