Oneonta Drops Weekend Series to Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team fell 13-2 and 5-0 in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader at Cortland. Oneonta now drops to 19-9 overall and 5-4 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland moves 22-7 and 12-0 in the conference.

After three scoreless innings, Oneonta took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) scored on a Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) ground out to first. Senior Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) then scored on a Cortland short-stop throwing error.

Cortland loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and added a run when Nick Chemotti walked. Mat Bruno hit a sacrifice fly to bring another runner home, and a two-RBI double from Adam Mieczkowski made it 4-2.

Oneonta could not respond, and then Cortland rolled in the sixth inning with nine runs to go ahead 13-2. Hunter Holliday capped off the inning with a three-RBI double. Oneonta had one more chance in the seventh, but it was the final as they went 1-2-3.

Oneonta was shut out 5-0 in the second game. Holliday hit a single to left field, and Bonacci reached home to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the fourth, Cortland brought in two more to push the lead to 3-0. Sandoval hit a double in the top of the sixth, but Cortland grounded out the following batter.

The home team added another run in the sixth as Oneonta's hitting struggles continued. A final run from Cortland in the eighth secured the victory.

Oneonta returns home on Fri. Apr. 21 to host Fredonia at 3 p.m.
