BRIDGEWATER, VA -Â The Oneonta baseball team led 7-4 after the seventh inning, but Bridgewater scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure a 10-7 win over the Red Dragons on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta moves to 1-2 with the loss, while the Eagle go to 2-6 overall.Â
The Red Dragons struck first in their opening at-bat when senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) hit a three-run home run to put Oneonta up 3-0. The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the third when Lucas Bauer scored on an Oneonta error. Bridgewater tied 3-3 in the fourth when Bauer hit a two-run home run.
Oneonta struggled to hit as the Eagles went on to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Collin Reid doubled to right field, which brought Jefferey Snider home. The Red Dragons registered four hits in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) led off with a single, reaching second when Liquori grounded out. Foglia scored on a single from junior Cole Rockwell (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), and Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) doubled to bring another run. Junior Gregory Bandura (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) singled to allow Guillen to score before the third out.Â
Bridgewater went 1-2-3 at the bottom of the frame, with sophomore pitcher Devin Rooney (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) striking out two Eagles batters. At the top of the seventh, Oneonta tacked on one more run when Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) reached home on a wild pitch to go up 7-4. Roper struck out three more batters in the seventh to hold the Red Dragons' lead.Â
The momentum swung Bridgewater's way in the eighth as the Eagles brought in six runs. Bridgewater scored two runs on walks with the bases loaded, then a single and double brought in four more.Â
Rooney finished with six strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one run.
Nick Griffin (1-0) earned the win for Bridgewater, while Brett Tharp picked up the save.Â
Oneonta plays in their home opener on Sat. Mar. 4 at 2 p.m.Â
