Red Dragons Defense Shuts Down Lakers

Women's Basketball Holds Lakers to Below 20 Percent From Field in Conference Win

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Heading into halftime with an eight-point lead, the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team outscored Oswego State 38-14 in the second half for a 64-32 conference victory, Friday evening. Senior Olivia Dobrovosky (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) finished with the game-high 16 points as the Red Dragons improved to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the SUNYAC and the Lakers are now 11-6 on the season and 4-5 in the conference.

With the game tied at four at 7:12 in the first, Oneonta began to separate themselves with an 8-0 run. Junior Molly Stephens (LaGrange/Arlington) started it off with a layup then sophomore Sophia Wakin (Delhi/Delaware Academy) hit a midrange jumper from the corner. Sophomore Nadia Brown (Troy/Troy) made a pair at the line before she found Wakin in the paint to make it 12-4 Red Dragons with 2:38 remaining in the quarter. Sydney Hoefs made a three-pointer and cut the lead to five, but on the next Oneonta possession Brown passed it to graduate student Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) for a layup to make it a 14-7 game heading into the second.

Graduate student Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego), freshman Lidia Boucher (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central High School) and Stephens extended the Red Dragons lead to 13 to start the second. At 5:51, Stephens hit a triple and widened the margin to 24-10, however Oswego brought the deficit to eight with a 6-0 stretch. Logan Castiglione scored four points and Hoefs made the other basket. Before the half ended, Brown stole the ball for a fastbreak layup, Lakers' Elaina Johnson countered with a layup of her own, and Oneonta went into the locker room with a 26-18 lead.

The Red Dragons put the game out of reach in the third quarter with a 22-0 run, holding Oswego scoreless in the quarter until there was 1:52 left. Brown led during the stretch with nine points, Dobrovosky had six, junior Jenna Harclerode (Sayville/Sayville) added five, and Culeton topped it off with two. Peyton Daeffler made a three-pointer to put an end to the run and Castiglione hit her own triple, but Oneonta held a commanding 48-24 margin at the end of the third.

After Stephens made a layup to extend the lead to 26, Shania Iglesias scored the next five points and Johnson made a free throw to bring the Lakers to within 20 with 5:46 remaining. Dobrovosky then scored five straight points herself before the Red Dragons ended the game with three-pointers from Stephens, Harclerode, and senior Meg Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham).

Brown finished with 13 points and four assists, Stephens ended with 12 points and four rebounds, and Harclerode had eight points and the game-high 11 rebounds. Brown, Dobrovosky, and Culeton each recorded three steals.

Hoefs led Oswego with nine points and eight rebounds, while Castiglione finished with eight points.

The Red Dragons shot 36.5 percent from the field while they held the Lakers to 19.6 percent from the field. Oneonta also held a 52-38 rebounding advantage.
