Schwarzbeck Scores Career-High in Red Dragons Win Over Knights

GENESEO, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team outscored Geneseo by 20 points after the first quarter and went on to defeat the Knights 63-52, Friday evening. Freshman Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) posted a career-high 13 points as the Red Dragons (10-4, 5-2 SUNYAC) held the Knights (9-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) to a season-low 33.9 percent from the field.

Geneseo jumped out to an early 13-4 lead after the first quarter. Kerry Dennin led the quarter scoring with six points while senior Meg Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) hit a pair of free throws and sophomore Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy) made a fastbreak layup for Oneonta.

With 7:20 left in the second, Hannah Stockman made a three-pointer and gave the Knights their largest lead of the game, 18-6. Following Stockman's three, the Red Dragons found their stride and closed out the quarter with a 17-5 run. Nardelli started with a jumper and after junior Molly Stephens (LaGrange/Arlington) stole the ball, graduate student Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) converted the turnover into a layup. Senior Olivia Dobrovosky (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) cut the lead to four with a couple baskets, however Mackenzie Reigle scored a couple of her own to make it 22-14 Geneseo with 3:11 left. A minute later, Stephens drilled a pair of three-pointers and closed the gap to two. After Dennin split a pair at the free throw line, sophomore Nadia Brown (Troy/Troy) tied the game at 23 with a deep three seconds before the clock hit zero.

Schwarzbeck and Zuntag kept the momentum going in Oneonta's favor with an 11-1 stretch to start the third. Schwarzbeck hit three three-pointers and made it 34-24 with 4:47 left in the quarter. The Red Dragons closed out the quarter with a jumper by sophomore Sophia Wakin (Delhi/Delaware Academy) and a triple from sophomore Kennady Amo (Cape Vincent/Thousand Islands) as they went into the final quarter up 41-34.

Oneonta gave themselves a 16-point cushion after a 12-3 run to start the fourth. Dobrovosky scored eight of the points while Nardelli and Zuntag each had a basket during the stretch. Junior Jenna Harclerode (Sayville/Sayville) nailed a triple with a couple minutes remaining and the Red Dragons closed out the game with a few trips to the line.

Dobrovosky led Oneonta with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Stephens finished with nine points and Harclerode totaled nine rebounds.

Stockman had 15 points and four rebounds for Geneseo and Lauren Romito finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

The Red Dragons shot 40.4 percent from the field, including 40.0 percent from beyond the arc, while the Knights had a slight rebounding edge, 39-38.
