FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team took the first three quarters against Fredonia and built a large enough lead to cruise in the fourth quarter to a 60-51 victory, Saturday afternoon. Senior
Olivia Dobrovosky (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) had the game-high 14 points and eight rebounds as the Red Dragons improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC. The Blue Devils dropped to 3-8 on the season and 0-6 in the conference. Â
Sarah Seaman hit a couple three-pointers early in the first and helped Fredonia to a 10-5 lead. Multiple Red Dragons scored to keep the game close, however Seaman hit her third triple of the contest at 2:21 to make it 15-11. Oneonta closed out the quarter scoring the final six points. Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) made it a one possession game with a layup before sophomore
Sophia Wakin (Delhi/Delaware Academy) took the lead with a pair at the line and a layup. Â
Laurell Brown made a shot for the Blue Devils to tie it at 17 but were then held scoreless for the next 7:40 to coincide with a 13-0 Red Dragon run. Junior
Jenna Harclerode (Sayville/Sayville) had a couple layups assisted by sophomore
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy), junior
Molly Stephens (LaGrange/Arlington) found Dobrovosky for a midrange jumper, sophomore
Nadia Brown (Troy/Troy) took her defender one-on-one for the bucket, and senior
Meg Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) capped off the run with a couple three-pointers from the wing. Alena Wright ended the drought for Fredonia with a layup at 1:51 and a last second three from Renee Park cut the deficit to 22-33. Â
Oneonta opened the third with a 13-2 start. Dobrovosky hit a pair from the line and on the next possession she grabbed her own miss and kicked it out to Nardelli for the triple to extend the lead to 16. After Fredonia made two free throws, the Red Dragons worked inside and scored their next four baskets in the paint. Culeton made the final basket of the stretch with 4:01 left in the third to give the Red Dragons a 46-24 lead. The Blue Devils attempted to chip away at the lead and entered the fourth quarter down 16. Â
The lead showed to be too much for Fredonia as they could not cut the lead to single digits until 1:54 remained. Dobrovosky kept the Blue Devils at bay, scoring seven of the Red Dragons' 11 points in the quarter. Â
Nardelli finished with 12 points, off four made threes and had five rebounds. Culeton had nine points and eight rebounds. Â
Seaman ended with 11 points for Fredonia and Wright had 10 points and four blocks. Â
Oneonta shot 41.1 percent from the field and grabbed 39 rebounds while Fredonia shot 33.9 percent from the field and brought in 30 rebounds.
The Red Dragons are back in action December 28 for the start of a two-day trip in Las Vegas, NV. Oneonta will begin the trip against the University of Southern Maine at 1:00 pm (EST).
