SUNYAC Field Hockey Tournament Semifinal Preview: No. 2 Cortland vs. No. 3 Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team is set to travel to face SUNY Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Semifinal game at 4 p.m tomorrow, Wednesday, November 2 at SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.  

Ticket Information: General admission tickets are $5, while tickets for children ages 5-12 are $3. Children ages four and under and students from SUNYAC schools with a valid ID will be admitted free of charge.  

Last Matchup: The last time these two faced off was on October 12 on All College Field when Cortland won, 4-0.  

Season Recap: Oneonta (7-9, 4-2 SUNYAC) started off with a difficult non-conference schedule that led to a 1-5 start, which included three one score defeats, two of them happening in double overtime. In the second half of the season the Red Dragons turned it around in the win column and won six of their last 10 games and posted a 4-2 record in the conference. 

In their four conference wins, a different Red Dragon got the job done. Senior Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) hit the cage for the game-winner in the 2-1 double overtime victory over Oswego State on October 1. Senior Carly Waszczak (Northport, N.Y./Northport) recorded a hat trick and led the defense to hold Morrisville shotless in a 4-0 win on October 4. Junior Carly O'Connor (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) scored the lone goal of the Red Dragons, win and get in, 1-0 victory over Brockport on October 22. Junior Erin Clark (Somers, N.Y./Somers) closed out the conference season with a hat trick in Oneonta's 3-2 overtime win versus New Paltz and clinched them the three seed.  

Just the Stats: The offense is powered through Waszczak, Fleming, and Clark who are respectively first, second, and third on the team in goals and points. Wasczcak leads the team with seven goals for 14 points, Fleming has five goals and an assist for 11 points, and Clark has four goals and an assist for nine points. Seniors Claire Mahoney (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Sophia Little (Northport, N.Y./Northport), and junior Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport) created the chances and dished out the assists. This season, Mahoney leads the team overall with four assists and scored twice, while Little and Maniscalco each recorded three assists and a goal. Protecting the cage is senior Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place). Tumino started each game for the Red Dragons and allowed 27 goals while recording 100 saves for a .787 save percentage with two complete and two combined shutouts. Protecting Tumino is the defensive line consisting of Waszczak, senior Victoria Pixley (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), and junior Larkin Uhl (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston). The defensive has held opponents to six or fewer shot attempts on goal in eight games, while Waszczak and Pixley each recorded three defensive saves this season.

About Cortland: Cortland finished their 2022 regular season winning six of their last seven for a 12-4 overall record and a 5-1 conference record, which earned them the two seed. Keirra Ettere, Lily Fox, Hanna Corrigan, and Jamie Snyder are the main offensive force for Cortland. Ettere leads their team in goals (14) and points (30). Fox had nine goals with seven assists and Snyder also tallied nine goals along with three assists this season. Corrigan leads in assists (9) and tacked on six goals. Their main goalie, Emma Morgan started 15 games, allowed 14 goals and saved 27 shots for a .659 save percentage with six complete and one combined shutout.

What's on the Line: The winner of this game will face the winner of the Geneseo and New Paltz contest on Saturday, November 5, in the SUNYAC Championship.
