Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late goals sink women's soccer at Vassar

A Quick Look
The Vassar women's soccer team capitalized on a pair of second half goals to break a tie and rally for a 4-2 victory over SUNY Oneonta on Saturday. With the victory, the Brewers move to 3-2 on the season, while the Red Dragons slip to 0-5 overall.

The Inside Story
Locked in a 2-2 tie following a tally in the 76th minute from junior Joie Tortorice (Melville/Walt Whitman) off an assist from classmate Natalie Sancilio (Smithtown/Smithtown West), the Brewers mounted the pressure.  After several attempts, Vassar pulled ahead in the 86th minute following a corner from sophomore Cate Greene. In a scramble in front of the goal, an Oneonta defender inadvertently kicked the ball into the left corner of the net for an own goal and a 3-2 home team lead.

Just under three minutes later, the Brewers tacked on their fourth of the contest following a great feed from junior Adie Amore. Banking into the middle, Amore lofted a shot in toward the left side of the goal. Senior Skylar Herrera-Ross found the ball, heading it in past the Red Dragons keeper for the two-goal edge (4-2).

The Brewers opened the game's scoring, as rookie midfielder London Wilkes collected the ball that went wide left on an attempted Herrera-Ross header. Settling it, Wilkes fired off a shot into the left corner for the 1-0 edge. Oneonta rallied in the 19th minute, as junior forward Abbey Wood (Dover Plains/Dover Plains) sent in a perfectly placed ball on the corner attempt. Rookie defender Shannon Lowney (Massapequa/Massapequa) was there at the left corner to head it in past Vassar keeper Julia Reigrut for the 1-1 tie.

Vassar owned a 2-1 lead at halftime as Amore clipped it in down the middle off a pass from sophomore forward Ariana Pjetri with seconds left in the opening half.

Just the Stats
Vassar owned a 17-3 advantage in shots, while also holding a 4-3 edge in corners.

In the Vassar net, Reigrut did not have any stops while recording her first collegiate victory. For the Red Dragons, senior Claire Lepper (Poland/Poland) made eight saves.

What's Next
Oneonta will travel to SUNY Geneseo next Friday to open the SUNYAC portion of the schedule.  Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm.
