Cortland Sweeps Baseball in SUNYAC Doubleheader

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball was swept by SUNY Cortland in SUNYAC action Thursday afternoon at Red Dragon Baseball Field by scores of 14-1 and 9-4. Oneonta is now 7-3 on the year with a 2-2 mark in the SUNYAC.

The Inside Story
In game one, Oneonta got into trouble early when Cortland plated five runs with two out in the top of the second inning. Matthew Krafft drove in the first two runs with a single to centerfield, scoring Ben Rhodes and Daniel Coleman.

Cortland broke the game open with eight more runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 13-0 lead. Oneonta avoided the shutout in the bottom of the seventh when Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) doubled down the left field, scoring Jake Barrett (Smithtown/St. Anthony's) with the lone run for the hosts.

Southpaw Michael Sadowski (Queens/Queens Metropolitan) kept Cortland under control out of the bullpen as the freshman allowed just one run in fourth and a third innings of work while striking out three. Classmate Matthew Russo (Poughquag/Arlington) tossed a scoreless ninth for Oneonta in his first collegiate appearance.

In the nightcap, Cortland got on the board in the top of the first on a Colin BeVard RBI ground out. Cortland added another run when Ben Rhodes drove in Scott Giordano with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Oneonta cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning on a James Zupo (Massapequa/Massapequa) double into the left centerfield gap, scoring Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford).

Cortland added a pair of runs in the third and the fifth to take what looked to be a comfortable 6-1 lead, but Oneonta refused to go down without a fight. In the bottom of the fifth, Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) led the inning off with a single to left, chasing Cortland starter Brandon Buchan from the game. Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) greeted Cortland reliever Spencer Weyand with a double off the top the right field fence, putting runners on second and third. Liam Kaseta (Somers/Somers) followed with a slow roller to the pitcher, the attempt to throw out McAllister at the plate got away from the catcher, cutting the Cortland lead to 6-2. After a Michael Sabatine (Fairport/Fairport) walk loaded the bases, Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) singled home Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) to make it 6-3. James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Kaseta to pull Oneonta within two.

Unfortunately, that would be as close as Oneonta would get as Cortland added three more runs in the top of the seventh to make the final 9-4.

What's Next
Oneonta will look to get back on track when they host Union College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, April, 11th at noon.
