A Quick Look
For the second time this week, the SUNY Oneonta softball team managed a split of a doubleheader with rival Cortland. After dropping the opener 9-4, the hosts bounced back and took the second game 7-5. Oneonta now has an overall record of 4-2 which is also their SUNYAC East Division record while Cortland leaves town 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the East.
Â
The Inside Story
In the nightcap, Oneonta jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. Four different players drove in a run including an RBI double off the bat of sophomore
Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy) that put Oneonta ahead 3-0. DiGiovanni came around to score on a single to right-center by freshman
Victoria Hines (Levittown/Division Avenue).
Â
The hosts added another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to center field by senior
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) that drove in classmate
Meaghan Raleigh (Endwell/Maine Endwell).
Â
Senior
Amber Badillo (Mohegan Lake/Shrub Oak) came through with a two-out double to left-center field to drive in both Koch and classmate
Kristen Collins (Hicksville/Holy Trinity) to give Oneonta a commanding 7-0 lead.
Â
Cortland wouldn't go quietly, as they rallied for all five of its runs in the top of the seventh inning. Alyssa Finno led off with a double to left-center and stayed put on a fielding error that allowed the next batter to reach first base. Finno then scored on a single down the right field line giving Cortland runners at the corners.
Â
Gina Meyers singled to center field to score Sabrina Caputo from third and keep the rally going with no outs. Another error loaded the bases and then everyone moved up one base on an infield fly that plated another run. Cailey Cutita then hit a sacrifice fly to score Meyers and then Kelly O'Gorman scored the final run for Cortland on a single to center field by Lexi Szesnat.
Â
Freshman
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) threw six-plus innings allowing three runs, 1 earned, to earn her first collegiate victory.
Â
In the opening game today, a six-run fourth for Cortland blew the game open. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of O'Gorman, as she smacked a grand slam over the center field fence.
Â
Oneonta scored single runs in the third and sixth innings before plating two more in the seventh. Badillo hit a solo home run in the sixth for her first of the season. Koch drove in a pair of runs in the game.
Â
Weber suffered her first loss of the season allowing six earned runs in 3-2/3rds innings.
Â
Just the Stats
Koch collected five hits on the day including a perfect 3-for-3 in game 2 to go with her two runs batted in. Badillo drove in four runs today including three in the game 2 victory.
