Baseball returns to action with sweep of Canton

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team returned to the diamond for the first time in 370 days, sweeping SUNY Canton in a non-conference doubleheader with scores of 5-2 and 15-1.

The Inside Story
In the first game, Canton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ty Reed grounded out with bases loaded, scoring Dyllon Bougor from third. The Red Dragons responded with three of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Michael Sabatine (Fairport/Fairport) knotted the game at 1-1 when he scampered home from third on a pass ball. With two out and runners on first and second, Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) smacked a two-run double into the left centerfield gap to give Oneonta a 3-1 advantage.
The Red Dragons added to their lead in the bottom of the second on a Jake Barrett (Smithtown/St. Anthony's) RBI single, scoring Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford). The Roos got the run back in the top of the third before Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) capped the scoring with an RBI ground out in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 5-2.
Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) finished the game going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) and Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) added two hits apiece. Matthew Petrossi (Fairport/Fairport) earned his first win as a Red Dragon after allowing just one hit while striking out five in four innings of work. Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn his first save of the season.

In the nightcap, the Red Dragons were able to score 15 runs despite collecting just seven hits in the game as Canton served up 11 walks. James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) paced the Red Dragons, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Sean Liquori (Thiells/North Rockland) capped off a great day with two RBI and three runs scored. Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) chipped in with three RBI while Liam Kaseta (Somers/Somers) had two hits and a pair of RBI.
Michael Dunne (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) earned the win after pitching the first three innings of the game, giving up one run on six hits. The bullpen allowed just two base runners in the final four innings of the game as the Red Dragons improved to 2-0 on the year.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action on Wednesday, March 24th when they host Cazenovia in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00.
