Baseball blanks Cobleskill in home opener

Deberardinis allows one hit in six innings of work

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team opened newly renovated Red Dragon Baseball Field with a 9-0 victory over SUNY Cobleskill Wednesday afternoon. The win lifts the Red Dragons record to 1-2 on the season.

The Inside Story
Senior hurler David Deberardinis (Fishkill/John Jay) allowed just one hit over six innings of work while striking out four Tigers to earn the win.

The Red Dragons jumped on the board in the bottom of the first when Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) scored from third on a wild pitch. Oneonta broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. James Zupo (Massapequa/Massapequa) got the inning started with a leadoff triple into the right centerfield gap. Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) plated Zupo with a ground out to short, upping the Oneonta lead to 2-0. After Jake Barrett (Smithtown/St. Anthony's) made his way to third with a single, a wild pitch and a pass ball, a Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) fly out to center gave the Red Dragons a 3-0 advantage. The Red Dragons capped off the inning with RBI singles from Ryan McGrane (Plainedge/Plainedge) and James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) to make the score 5-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) created his own run. The junior made his way around the bases on a single, a pair of stolen bases and wild pitch, increasing the lead to 6-0. Oneonta would add a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh when they took advantage of a Cobleskill error.  The Red Dragons wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the eighth when Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) drove in James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) with an RBI single.

Just the stats.
Four different Red Dragons had multiple hits on the day. Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) went 2-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) also went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and three stolen bases. Jake Barrett (Smithtown/St. Anthony's) chipped in with two hits and a run scored. The Red Dragons finished the day with nine stolen bases as a team. Michael Dunne (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus), Dean Langman (New Hartford/New Hartford) and Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Oneonta.
