Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Corso eclipses 1,000 points; Women's basketball bows out of SUNYAC tournament

Senior becomes only fourth player in women's history to surpass 1,000 points and 600 rebounds

A Quick Look
Senior Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) scored a game high 27 points including her 1,000th career point but it wasn't enough to lead the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team past Buffalo State in the SUNYAC tournament quarterfinals.  Oneonta was defeated 61-50 ending its season with an overall record of 12-14.

Corso also added a game high 12 rebounds and already surpassed 600 for her career earlier this season.  Her 1,000 points and 600 rebounds makes her only the fourth women's player to eclipse both marks in program history.

The Inside Story
Oneonta entered the final quarter with a 40-39 lead and the two squads continued to go back-and-forth with the lead until a deadlock at 44 apiece.  Buffalo State (16-10) senior Katie Villarini completed an old fashion three-point play to give the Bengals a lead that they would not relinquish.  Another three-point play by Villarini and a three-pointer by Lexi Emmi pushed Buffalo's lead to seven points midway through the quarter.  The Bengals totaled 22 points in the final quarter to only 10 points for Oneonta.

A layup by Corso at the 2:46 mark cut Oneonta's deficit to seven points but a three-pointer by Kendall Mills one minute later essentially put the game out of reach for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta trailed 8-4 in the opening quarter until back-to-back threes by Corso gave the Red Dragons its first lead.  Buffalo regained the lead and finished the first quarter with a 14-12 advantage.

The two teams took turns with the lead during the opening three minutes of the second quarter.  With the score tied at 20 apiece, Oneonta scored nine unanswered points to seize control.  Four different players contributed to the burst including a three-pointer by freshman Lauren Obermayer (East Greenbush/Columbia).  A jumper by junior Maya Bernsley (Monroe/Monroe Woodbury) gave the Red Dragons a 31-24 lead at the break.

The Bengals got themselves back into the contest in the third quarter outscoring the Red Dragons 15-9.  Senior Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) scored the first basket of the quarter to give Oneonta a nine-point advantage.  Oneonta continued to hold a lead of 37-30 after a Corso layup at the 3:11 mark.  The Bengals used a 9-3 run to end the quarter pulling to within one point at 40-39.

Just the Stats
Oneonta held advantages in fast break points (13-2) and points off turnovers (21-9).  Buffalo State held advantages in bench points (29-14) and points in the paint (26-12).
