Canton, NY - Men's tennis hope to start off the spring season with a high note was dashed as the always strong St. Lawrence University Saints toppled the Red Dragons 9-0. The win streak now against the Red Dragons remains intact since 2011 when it was the last time Oneonta defeated St. Lawrence.
Oneonta started off strong on the number one doubles court when senior
Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and junior
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) went up two breaks holding a 3-0 lead. The lead evaporated and from there the duo could only win two more games on route to an 8-5 setback. A similar fate for the number two tandem of sophomore Mathew Reinhold and promising freshman
Jacob Dornsife (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) also went up a break in their match. The break was surrendered back and the Saints doubled up the pair 8-4.
A 3-0 deficit for the men's tennis team of Oneonta was too much of a hole and they were also shutout of the singles competition. Some bright notes though as Ammirati after dropping the first set at love went up a break in the second set but he could not hold on and lost the first singles matchup 6-0, 6-3. In the third position Dornsife lost the first set 6-2. He fought in the second set going up a break of serve,  but the more experienced Saint won the big points at the right time closing out the match 7-5 in the second set.
Some exhibition doubles wins for freshmen August Lepique and
Mason Spottek (Conklin/Susquehanna Valley) was noteworthy at doubles. Reinhold has improved greatly since last season and he secured an exhibition singles win to send the Red Dragons home with some consolation victories.
The challenging season ahead continues as the Red Dragons head down to Edgewater, New Jersey for a matchup against Yeshiva University. That contest will be played at the Binghamton Tennis Center of Edgewater, NJ with action on Tuesday night, February 25th at 8 PM. Yeshiva has been to the NCAA's the last several seasons but the Red Dragons upended them last year and will look to make it two in a row against this highly touted opponent.
