Women's basketball clipped by Geneseo in final minute

Senior Leanne Corso scores game high 20 points off the bench

A Quick Look
Senior Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) scored a game high 20 points off the bench, but SUNY Oneonta was clipped in the final minute by SUNY Geneseo 50-46 in SUNYAC women's action today.

The Inside Story
Oneonta (4-9, 1-5 SUNYAC) came out strong in the opening quarter of play taking advantage of poor shooting by Geneseo (12-2, 5-2 SUNYAC).  The Red Dragons scored the first 10 points of the game capped by a three-pointer from Corso.  The Knights didn't score its first points until 1:57 left in the quarter and closed with the final six points cutting its deficit to 10-6 entering the second quarter.

Geneseo turned the tables in the second stanza scoring 15 unanswered points during a six-minute stretch to grab a 26-18 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter.  The Knights entered halftime leading 26-20.

Oneonta regrouped in the third quarter and pulled to within three points, 39-36, at the close of the period.  The Red Dragons fell behind by 11 points after a Lauren Romito trey gave the Knights a 31-20 lead.  Oneonta continued to trail by double digits late in the quarter before putting together an 11-4 run over the final 4:35. Three-pointers by junior Maya Bernsley (Monroe/Monroe Woodbury), freshman Margaret Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) and Corso fueled the run.

A Corso jumper knotted the score at 39 apiece and then another three tied the game once again at 42 with 4:29 left.  The two teams continued to match baskets until a pair of free throws by Kerrin Montgomery gave Geneseo a 48-46 lead with 59 seconds on the clock.  After a turnover by Oneonta, Sara Ciotti iced the game with a layup with 11 seconds to go.

Just the Stats
Oneonta outrebounded Geneseo 42-35 led by senior Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) who grabbed a game high 10 boards.  Oneonta's reserves scored 31 points in the game and the Red Dragons outscored the Knights in the paint 22-14.
