Softball bows out of SUNYAC tournament

A Quick Look
The 2019 season for SUNY Oneonta softball ended this morning with a 9-2 loss to rival Cortland on the second day of the SUNYAC tournament.  Oneonta lost 9-2 to its rival ending its season with an overall record of 16-21-1.

The Inside Story
Top-seeded Cortland took advantage of miscues in the field to score all of its runs in the first three innings of play.  Cortland loaded the bases with one out in the first inning and scored its first run on a sacrifice fly.  The next two runs came in on a two-run single by Sabrina Caputo.

Cortland added five runs in the second inning aided by three Oneonta errors that led to a pair of unearned runs.  Four different players drove in a run during the inning for Cortland.

Cortland's final run came in the third inning on an infield single by Hannah Thornhill.

Oneonta posted its two runs in the top of the fourth inning.  The inning started with back-to-back singles by senior Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) and junior Jade Meehan (Halcottsville/Roxbury Central).  Del Genio scored on a double to center field by senior Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley), which also moved Meehan to third base.  Meehan finally scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Madison Capozucca (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls).

Junior Julia Calabro (Wantagh/St. John the Baptist) took the loss for Oneonta lasting 1-2/3rds innings.  Classmate Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack) finished the game allowing no earned runs while striking out three batters.

Just the Stats
Del Genio's hit today was her 60th of the season, which tied the single season record set back in 2001 by Hall of Famer and current women's soccer coach Liz McGrail.  Last weekend, she set the single season record for total bases, which now sits at 93.

What's Next
The postseason awards for the season will begin rolling out next week with the All-Conference selections being released.  In the coming weeks, the NFCA will release its All-Region and All-America teams.
