Baseball takes series finale against Plattsburgh, 4-3

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team captured the rubber match of their three-game series against Plattsburgh Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 victory at Damaschke Field.

The Inside Story
Oneonta (12-13, 4-8 SUNYAC) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first.  After back-to-back singles to start the game by Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) and David Deberardinis (Fishkill/John Jay), John Zinko (Wallkill/Wallkill) drove is Mullins with an infield hit. A groundout to the right side by Vincent Prisco (Northport/Saint Dominic) allowed Deberardinis to trot home to put the Red Dragons in front 2-0.
Plattsburgh (5-15, 3-9 SUNYAC) rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth, knotting the game at 2-2. With runners on second and third, Simon Alvarez put Plattsburgh on the board with an RBI groundout to short. A Rocco Cipriano single through the left side of the infield tied the game.

Oneonta went back in front in the bottom of the fourth. With two, Mike Graves (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) got the inning started with a single to right, but an error by the outfielder allowed Graves to move into scoring position.  After another error by Plattsburgh put runners at the corners, a wild pitch allowed Graves to scamper home to give the Red Dragons a 3-2 advantage.
Oneonta added a crucial run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by James Zupo (Massapequa/Massapequa) to left field, scoring Vincent Prisco (Northport/Saint Dominic) to make the score 4-2.  Plattsburgh threatened in the top of the ninth with one run, but with the tying run on first base, Steven Gerringer (LaGrangeville/Arlington) got Anthony Maag to groundout to short to end the game.

Ryan Fay (Carmel/Carmel High School) earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings in relief while striking out two Cardinals.  Steven Gerringer (LaGrangeville/Arlington) earned his third save of the season after getting the final four outs of the game. John Zinko (Wallkill/Wallkill) went 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI while Mike Graves (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) had a pair of hits and a run scored.
