The SUNY Oneonta baseball team defeated Utica College 5-2 in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Damaschke Field.
The Inside Story
Oneonta (14-16) jumped out to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Â After
Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) led off the game with a double down the left field line,
David Deberardinis (Fishkill/John Jay) put the Red Dragons on the board with an RBI single to right. The Score remained the same until Oneonta plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth. After
Brandon LaVenture (Schenectady/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) earned a pinch hit walk to start the inning,Â
Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) came off the bench and delivered an RBI double into the right centerfield gap to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.
Vincent Prisco (Northport/Saint Dominic) would cap off the innings with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lamonica to make it 3-0.
Utica (9-15) cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Chris Ramsundar. The Red Dragons gave themselves some breathing room when they scored two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. After
Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led off the inning with a walk,
Vincent Prisco (Northport/Saint Dominic) belted an RBI triple into the right centerfield gap. With
Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties) on first and
Vincent Prisco (Northport/Saint Dominic) on third, the Red Dragons attempted a double steal, but the Pioneers cut down Prisco at home to keep the deficit at three.
Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties) would eventually score after the Utica pitcher Kyle Bailey uncorked a pair of wild pitches, upping the Red Dragons lead to 5-1.
The Pioneers scraped across a run in the top of the ninth to make the final score 5-2. Oneonta freshman
Dean Langman (New Hartford/New Hartford) earned the win after tossing four scoreless innings in relief.
Michael Dunne (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus),
Ryan Steeg (Thornwood/Byram Hills) and
Joseph Canonaco (Briarcliff Manor/Briarcliff) each pitched a scoreless inning for the Red Dragons.
Lazaro Moralez (Virginia Beach, VA/Green Run) went 2-for-3 on the day with a walk.
Vincent Prisco (Northport/Saint Dominic) drove in a pair of runs while
Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) had an RBI and scored twice.
