Men’s Tennis topple St. John Fisher 9-0

Pittsford, NY – SUNY Oneonta men's tennis with three-freshman in the lineup move to 5-4 on the season with a shutout win over St. John Fisher.

Doubles play saw the number one tandem of junior Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and senior captain Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) get broken early but got even quickly on route to a strong 8-2 triumph.  The number two duo of sophomore pair Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) and Benjamin Cohen have a complete mastery with serves, net play and quality return of serves pulling off an impressive shutout 8-0.  The number three pair of freshmen John Clayton and Matthew Reinhold (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) who also played at the same high school found themselves locked in a tight battle finally converting a win on their sixth match point also saving four-match points against closing the Red Dragon doubles sweep 8-7.

A 3-0 love lead for the Red Dragons safely in the bank the singles began and Oneonta completed the shutout with all six single entrants going on to straight set wins.  Ammirati and Fox at singles flights one and two respectfully won 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 7-6.  Freshman Dalton Capobianco (Daniel Island, SC/SC Connections Charter School) still nursing an ailing shoulder served underhand but his overall consistency simply was too much for his St. John Fisher foe and Capobianco cruised easily to a straight set win 6-2, 6-3.  Smith won at the fourth position 6-1, 6-4 with only a slight scare coming from the St. John opponent in the fourth set which Smith weathered and closed out the match.  Junior Alexander Reiley (Manorville/Eastport) got off to a bit of a slow start but settled down to a straight set win never really getting in any trouble clinching a 6-3, 6-2 victory.  Junior Kiran Narsipur (Ossining/Ossining) picked up his first starting singles position of the season and also went on to a straight set win toppling his opponent in dramatic fashion with his teammates rooting him on as he was the last match on court.  The final score in Narsipur's favor was 7-6, 6-1 and he completed the shutout for the Red Dragons.

Mid-season break as the Red Dragons men's tennis team will get some rest and re-charge before taking on the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 30th at 2:30 PM at the Midtown Athletic Club in Rochester, NY.
