Geneva, NY – The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team suffered their second setback of this young season as they were shutout by the nationally ranked Hobart College Statesmen 9-0.
The doubles got underway with the number one duo of junior
Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and senior
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) staying toe to toe with their opponents having been drawn into several deuce games. But the pair could not get that elusive game point converted that they had several times. They ultimately lost an 8-1 decision. The number two tandem of sophomore
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) and freshman
Dalton Capobianco (Daniel Island, SC/SC Connections Charter School) also had several games points on their racquets and additional break points but could never convert and lost lopsidedly 8-0. The pair of freshman
Matthew Reinhold (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) who got his first start of the spring season and junior
Kiran Narsipur (Ossining/Ossining) had some inexperience jitters and never could give their Hobart foes any concern and went down quietly 8-0.
Hobart had a 3-0 lead going into singles and The Red Dragons could do no better and went down in all the singles courts completing the shutout for Hobart. Noteworthy though was number two singles player Fox who played beautifully competing in several long rallies against a nationally ranked opponent. Fox could not convert on the many opportunities created for himself but proved he can compete against an opponent of this caliber. Freshman John Clayton lost his first set 6-0 in the sixth position. Clayton though did break serve twice in the second set and kept the match interesting against a more seasoned opponent and eventually had to settle for a 6-0, 6-2 defeat.
Next up for the Red Dragons is a date with the four-time defending champions of the Skyline Conference the Yeshiva University Maccabees. That contest will take place on Tuesday, Feb 26
th at 8 PM at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, NJ.
