Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball downed by Worcester State

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team fell tonight to Worcester State 52-42 in its opening game of the Hochberg Family Tournament hosted by Vassar.  The Red Dragons will now face Eastern University in the consolation game tomorrow at 1pm.

The Inside Story
Worcester State (3-1) outscored Oneonta (1-1) in each of the four quarters tonight.  The Lancers pulled away early in the third quarter and Oneonta could never get as close as five points.

The Lancers scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to open a 13-point lead at 31-18.  Maya Mosley scored four of her game-high 16 points during the run.

Oneonta made a push and closed the gap to seven points on a made three-pointer by senior Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) to end the quarter.  Corso hit another trey to bring the Red Dragons back to within five points early in the fourth quarter but that would be as close as they would come.

A pair of treys by Charlotte MacMillan gave the Lancers a 9-4 lead midway through the first quarter.  Two free throws from Corso and a layup by Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) closed the gap to 9-8.  Worcester State managed one free throw over the final 1:39 to grab a slim 10-8 lead at the end of one quarter.

The Lancers scored seven unanswered to begin the second quarter to open a 17-8 lead.  Oneonta battled back over the final stretch to cut its deficit to 21-18 at the break.  Corso led the way with five points.

Just the Stats
Corso was the only player in double figures for Oneonta tonight with 14 points.  Oneonta's bench outscored Worcester State's 27-8 led by Corso.
