For the second straight day, the SUNY Oneonta softball team rallied late to advance in the SUNYAC Tournament being held at SUNY Geneseo. Today, it was a come-from-behind 4-3 win against rival Cortland. Oneonta (21-13) is 2-0 in the double elimination tournament and will play Geneseo, who is 2-0 also, tomorrow at 9am. The game was moved to Saturday after play was suspended today due to weather.
Â
Oneonta's rally came in the sixth inning where they made Cortland (21-18) pay for a pair of errors to grab the 4-3 lead. Junior
Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) started the inning with a walk and went to second on a ground out by classmate
Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke). Del Genio scored from second on a fielding error by the first baseman on a ball hit by junior
Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley).
Â
Back-to-back walks to senior
Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) and freshman
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) loaded the bases with one out. A third straight walk to
Bailey Schwark (Port Ewen/Kingston) forced in
Jade Meehan (Halcottsville/Roxbury Central), who came in to run for Sabatino. McFall then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop on a play at the plate on a ball that was hit by
Amanda Sexton (Port Jervis/Port Jervis). The inning ended when Cortland turned a double play, but the damage was done.
Â
Sophomore
Julia Calabro (Wantagh/St. John the Baptist) shut down the Cortland offense upon entering the game in the first inning with no outs and the bases loaded. Calabro went the rest of the way allowing five hits and one run while recording a pair of strikeouts to even her record at 7-7.
Â
Cortland scored two runs in the first inning charged to starter
Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack). They added a single run in the third inning to carry a 3-1 lead into the sixth.
Â
Oneonta's first run of the game came in the second on a ground out by
Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) that knocked in Koch from third base. Koch had singled to start the inning and benefitted from another error that allowed her to advance to third base on a ball hit by Sexton.
