Saratoga, NY – The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team dropped its season finale to the 2017-18 campaign at 8-12 losing to Union College 7-2 with four seniors in the lineup closing out careers.
Doubles was incredibly competitive as the number one team of junior
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and sophomore
Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) went up 2-0 at the beginning of the match in the top spot. The teams traded breaks throughout the competition and had to settle the contest with a tiebreaker. The Oneonta duo went down 3-0 early and fought back actually owning two match points that could not be converted and the number one flighted pair dropped a hard fought 9-8 decision. The number two pair of seniors teamed together in their regular spot as senior Tim Distler and senior
Zach Lasky (Colonie/Colonie) finished out their double careers with an outstanding win converting match point with an overpowering put away volley resulting in a final score of 8-5 for the two graduates.
The doubles was close but left the Red Dragons with a 2-1 deficit as singles play began. The lone victory in singles came from fourth positioned player senior
Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville) who closed out his career today earning an incredible 7-5, 6-3 win. The other notable highlight came from Distler who opened up the match with a 6-1 set but ultimately dropped the next two sets and lost 2 sets to 1.
The Red Dragons had a challenging year fighting through several injuries resulting in many setbacks. The men's tennis team was noted to have incredible comradery and resolve competing with a mid-season revamped lineup. Five seniors graduate and the Red Dragons will open up in the fall with a new look and very young squad to build upon when they hold their first practice on August 29
th.
