Men's lacrosse smothers Brockport on senior day

Red Dragons come-from-behind to defeat Golden Eagles 7-6

The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team smothered Brockport in the second half today en route to a come-from-behind, 7-6, victory in the final game of the season.  Led by its 10 seniors, the Red Dragons finish the season 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC.  The loss for the Golden Eagles dropped them to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The game today turned in the third quarter for the Red Dragons trailing 4-2 at halftime.  The Red Dragons posted a five spot while holding Brockport to just a single goal to grab a 7-5 lead entering the fourth period.

Senior Hunter DeLuca (Medford/Patchogue Medford) led the charge in the third scoring two of his game high three goals on the afternoon.  Senior John Shea (Huntington/Huntington) and juniors Pete McCormick and Stephen Panno (Holtsville/Sachem East) each added goals for Oneonta.

Playing a man down in the final 32 seconds, the Golden Eagles had a point-blank opportunity to tie the game with six seconds left, but junior goalie Zachary Flynn (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) came up with the save to preserve the victory.  Flynn finished the game with 12 saves, but the biggest one came with the game on the line.

Brockport scored the only two goals of the first quarter coming from Jake Recor and Nick Daigle.  Patrick Sheridan added a pair of goals in the second quarter to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead with just over eight minutes left in the first half.

Oneonta finally broke through on an unassisted goal by junior Thomas Moore (Rockville Centre/South Side/Rockville Centre ).  Moore then assisted on a goal by DeLuca with seven seconds remaining in the quarter to pull Oneonta to within a pair of goals heading into the break.

Brockport held the advantage in shots, 31-22, in the game and won 9-of-16 faceoffs.  The Red Dragons collected 19 ground balls and were successful on 14-of-15 clears.
