Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's tennis shuts out city rival Hartwick to end two match losing streak

Oneonta, NY – An end to a rivalry that that has lasted over two decades came to an end today as Oneonta men's tennis overwhelmed their city foe Hartwick Hawks 9-0 on the campus of SUNY Oneonta.  The match that was originally scheduled to be played at Hartwick was moved to the SUNY Oneonta Tennis Courts and played in front of supporters from both schools witnessed the Red Dragons stay undefeated over that 20 + years' time span as the Red Dragons shutout the Hawks.  The Hartwick men's tennis program is being discontinued and the rivalry has ended with SUNY Oneonta men's tennis dominating throughout.

The doubles lineup today was tweaked today to try and end the Red Dragons two match slide.  Senior Tim Distler and senior Zach Lasky (Colonie/Colonie) proved to be too much for their Hartwick rivals in the number one position.  The pair started off slowly but came back and went onto a lopsided 8-2 win.  Junior Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and senior James Garzia (Marcellus/Marcellus) were teamed together for the first time this year and defeated the Hawks number two flighted team 8-2.  Sophomore Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and senior Andrew Reiley (Manorville/Eastport) also were paired together for the first time this spring and had little trouble winning an 8-1 decision.

Singles and a 3-0 lead in tow proved to be insurmountable for the Hawks as the Red Dragons continued their domination and completed the shutout on all courts.  Lasky had a slight hiccup at the beginning of the match and was down 2-1.  He faltered no more and won the next 11 games and secured a 6-2, 6-0 win in the number one spot.  Senior Cole Laffite playing up in position from his usual fourth spot today at number two was almost perfect in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph.  Freshman Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) got a start in third singles and was dominant in doubling up his opponent 6-4, 6-2.  Garzia got his second singles win in a row as he took down his rival 6-2, 6-1.  Freshman Benjamin Cohen got a rare start today in singles playing in the lineup at number five was overbearing securing a 6-2, 6-2 win.  The sixth position was given to sophomore Alex Reiley today and he did not disappoint earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory.  With Reiley's victory at six so ends a tennis competition that was a one sided history in Oneonta's favor.

The Red Dragon men now move to 7-10 on the year and try to put a dent in their next opponent.  The nationally ranked College of NJ is next on the slate and that match will be played on Saturday, April 28th beginning at 11 AM on the campus of TCNJ.
