Men’s tennis stops Hunter winning streak at 9 – earns an 8-1 win

Red Dragons down defending CUNY Champs

Flushing, NY – On the grounds of the National Tennis Center and site of the US Open, the SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team earned a hard fought win and took down the defending CUNY Champs, Hunter College, and its nine match win streak earning an 8-1 triumph.

Doubles was competitive on all the courts but The Red Dragons shut out Hunter in the stanza 3-0.  Junior Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and sophomore Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) were dominant at the net and with return of serve pulling out an 8-5 victory.  The number two doubles pair of senior Tim Distler and senior Zach Lasky (Colonie/Colonie) opened up the match with two breaks of serve and a 3-0 lead and never wavered taking home an 8-4 win.  Senior Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville) and freshman Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) were easy victors at the third position and continue their success since being paired earlier in the season as they registered and 8-2 win.

A 3-0 after the doubles held up as the Red Dragon men cruised on to an 8-1 win earning victories on five out of the six singles matches contested.  Ammirati was playing high powered tennis and won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.  The number two player Lasky was dominant in his win with a score of 6-0, 6-2.  In the fourth position Laffitte earned an easy first set victory but dropped the second set 6-3.  Laffitte regrouped and played an incredibly steady super-tiebreaker and won that 10-6 and the match.  Number five Distler and double bageled his opponent 6-0, 6-0 with an array of steady consistent tennis and commanding volley's at the net.  Smith completed the victory tallies on the day with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 win finally sending Hunter home with their first defeat on the year.

The men's tennis team now have highly competitive matches at Salisbury College in Maryland on Saturday, April 21st beginning at 11 AM followed by another tough match at Goucher College on Sunday, April 22nd at 2 PM.
