Men's lacrosse nipped by city rival Hartwick 8-6

ONEONTA, NY – Host Hartwick College scored the game's last three goals over the final 17:34 of action to rally for an 8-6 victory over city-rival SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday at Wright Stadium. The game was tied on six different occasions while also featuring four lead changes as the two schools battled for 60 minutes. The win for Hartwick ups its season record to 4-1 overall while the Red Dragons fell to 3-4 overall.

Six different players registered goals for the Red Dragons. Troy Stasko (Smithtown/Comsewogue) recorded five ground balls and won 10 face-offs. Goalie Zachary Flynn (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) made 12 saves in goal.

Sam Ferguson scored a game-high four goals and added an assist for 'Wick. Wyatt Long scored twice and Brett Maguire dished out a game-best five assists. Eric Schweitzer had game highs in both ground balls (8) and caused turnovers (4).

Both teams registered a pair of goals in the first quarter before the Red Dragons took a 3-2 lead 2:28 into the second quarter on Thomas McRae (Northport/Northport)'s third goal of the season. The game remained 3-2 for nearly 10 minutes until Long scored with 2:20 left in the half. Ferguson gave the Hawks a 4-3 lead with 18 ticks left. Maguire assisted on both tallies.

Hartwick extended its lead 3:55 into the third quarter as Long found the back of the net off a Justin Curreri feed. Oneonta responded with three straight goals 4:40 apart to grab a 6-5 advantage. Michael Cegielski (Yorktown Heights/Somers), Thomas Moore (Rockville Centre/South Side/Rockville Centre ) and Jimmy Kickel (South Setauket/Ward Melville) all tallied for the Red Dragons.

Maguire set up Ferguson with 2:34 left in the third and again 1:41 into the final quarter to put the Hawks up to stay. Cordell Armstrong put the game away with 34 seconds to go with Ferguson assisting.

The Hawks outshot the Red Dragons by a margin of 28-25. Oneonta had the edge in ground balls, 29-26, and face-offs, 10-8.

Oneonta opens up its SUNYAC portion of the schedule at home Saturday versus SUNY Geneseo beginning at 1pm.
