Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball defeats William Paterson 70-60

Thirty-nine points in the middle two quarters allowed the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team overtake William Paterson tonight enroute to a 70-60 victory in the semifinals of the Hat City Tournament at Western Connecticut State.  The victory for the Red Dragons puts them into the championship game tomorrow afternoon at 4pm against the hosts, who were winners against Bridgewater State.

Oneonta (8-1) had three players reach double figures in the game led by senior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) and junior Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) who each scored 14 points.  Junior Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) added 13 points for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta also got a pair of solid performances from junior Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) and sophomore Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) combining for 15 points off the bench.  Hayes scored eight points and grabbed five boards while Culeton scored seven points, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked four shots.  As a team, the Red Dragons collected nine blocks.

Trailing 22-16 after the first quarter, Corso drained a three and Amalbert made a layup to cut the deficit to one point.  William Paterson (5-7) regained its control momentarily to push back ahead 28-22 with 6:59 remaining.

Still trailing late in the quarter, Oneonta scored the final seven points to grab a 33-31 lead heading into halftime.  The run was capped with a three-pointer by Frank.  Both Frank and Corso made three, three-pointers in the game.

After a Frank free throw tied the game at 36 apiece early in the third quarter, Oneonta seized control of the contest outscoring William Paterson 19-6 to take a 55-42 lead into the final stanza.  Amalbert led the charge with six points in the quarter while senior Teresa Anken (Rome/Rome Free Academy) added four points.

William Paterson made a run midway through the final quarter and closed the gap to six points with less than two minutes to go, but Oneonta made its free throws down the stretch to pick up the 10-point win.
